Norethisterone - what happens with the next period?

My periods are very long and heavy. We're fortunate enough to be going to the French Alps for Christmas and me period is due at the start of the week.

An abdominal ultrasound has shown that I don't have any fibroids and because I'm 37 my GP isn't keen for me to have endometrial ablation. I'm going to try a mirena coil, but becaus i'm a bit worried that I won't get on with it I'm waiting to have it fitted after we're back.

I've been prescribed Norethisterone to postpone my period when we're away, it what happens to the next one? Will it come a month after my postponed one (so I'll push my whole cycle back a week), or will I have it when it would be due if I'd not taken the Norethisterone?

I should have asked my GP this, but it's only just occurred to me!

Hi, I have confusion about this drug too. I'm 54 and still havent reached menopause, although my last 3 periods were 3 months apart, as opposed to regular up until then. My present period started on NYE and as it was still so heavy after 15 days my GP prescribed me a 10 day course of 3 tablets.
It stopped it almost instantly but the cramps were so evil I was bent double, and this was after only a days worth, so I discontinued. My period came back again yesterday and is Niagara with bells on. I cant see how it can help with heavy bleeding when it's just "hiding" it for a bit. I also had leg cramps which freaked me as I could never take the pill as it gave me the symptoms of an impending stroke. Im also on bp meds and bp is iffy when taking this pill. I am at a loss what to do now. I can't go on bleeding like this yet my gp seemed nonchalant and more interested in halting the bleeding rather than explain a cause.
As a result Ive been googling and am now freaking about womb/cervical cancer, like you do. So much info about delaying periods available on line but little about abating them!

Just to add my experiences here. Am on this drug prior to egg freezing- I think because they want fo make sure I dont have a period on a saturday which would mean i cant do my baseline scan on a sunday.

I'd rather have just risked it. I have felt awful while taking it - terrible mood swings and deep depression to the point of almost being suicidal. Still feel like that and think it will only stop once period comes.

Three days later and period still hasnt come although do feel cramps and nausea.

I think I'm extremely sensitive to progresterone as when I had depoprovera in my teens I didnt have a period for 20 months- it was supposed to be 3! I also get PMDD which I believe is related to progresterone, but it's not quite as bad as this.

Never again.

I know this thread is old but I’ve been taking this to help with unexplained heavy bleeding as prescribed by doctor and hospital. I stopped taking them and started bleeding about 3 days after but this is one of the worst periods I’ve ever had. My stomachs in agony and it’s so heavy and there is so much clotting. I didn’t even put two and two together as a notice of my mood change.

i found my experience with Norethisterone (to delay for a holiday) was an overall good experience. I know i am replying late but i am sure there are some nervous people googling it.
i took the tablets for 10 days, and they worked perfectly. i did experience a bit more bloating and being a bit more sensitive but overall the tablet did what it said.
my next period arrives 3 days later but was very very heavy and very painful. purely because it was pushed.
my cycle AFTER that, came 32 days later. so in the same cycle range, just a few days late. and was back to a perfectly normal period. i think the tablets are great for holidays

I had irregular vaginal for two weeks and I was prescribed Steronate (Norethisterone). I took two pills a day for 20 days. I stopped last Tuesday & tiny blood drops started on Friday & here I am Monday & only drops. Is this normal?

I’ve taken these a couple of times, only ever to stop prolonged bleeding, they make me feel HORRIFIC. When I’m actually taking them, they make me horrible, a total bitch. Once I’ve finished, the period is terrible. Heavy and verrrryyy painful, so much so that even codeine doesn’t help the pain. Not sure which is the lesser of 2 evils! Taking them to stop a 6 week period and getting a few days relief, or not taking them for my period to go on how long. I hate being female!

JayCeed · 24/04/2023 15:44

Hi @Fluffybagel , how did it go for you? I’m in the same shoes and have been taking Utovlan to stop a 2-month bleed. I feel rubbish and I’m at my wits end!

I took it to end the bleeding. I needed a break, but couldn’t even leave the house for a day once I’d finished as I was so heavy! All synthetic hormones make me feel absolute pants!!! Hope you feel normal soon! It really is rubbish being a woman at times!! 😒

Exactly this is what I am currently doing I am taking the delay pills right now to push back my next period One Island holiday... I don't understand why this question is so difficult for people to answer.

I'm hoping my logic works because I don't want the risk of the side effects when I am on holiday

Sclearyx · 16/05/2024 12:20

bit late to this thread but I am due to go on holiday June 26th and my period is due June 28th I am going to take these tablets for my period due June 5th and stop taking them around June 14th hopefully to get my period all few days after, will this hopefully push my June 28th period back by a week or so or will I still get my period June 28th ?

Isitworth · 17/05/2024 13:01

@Sclearyx In theory this should work but female body is so unpredictable, and we are all different.
The tablets are licensed to delay your current period so the only thing guaranteed is that while you’re taking the tablets you won’t bleed, what happens with the next period is anyone’s guess because your cycle has been messed up.

Hi, I took Norethisterone In June as was going abroad for my sisters wedding and due on in the middle. Took for 10 days, stopped it and had a period 3 days later. However my next period was due 5 days ago , and I still haven’t come on although I feel like I could , did this happen to anyone else?
thanks xxx

Kaylamcgrath1990 · 05/09/2024 17:15

Worse thing I used because it mucked my next two cycles after that where I was bleeding for two weeks each cycle and GP told me that was because there was blood from the month I didn’t have the period left over so it made next cycles longer still suffering it now
