I love this name, with nn Eve or Evie.
But do you say Eve-lyn or Ever-lyn?

Eve-Lin.
I like it too.

marjolaine · 05/02/2012 15:05

Both DH and I say Ev-uh-lyn (not really an R sound in there, kinda softer, but not Eve-lyn)

Fayrazzled · 05/02/2012 15:12

I've known it to be pronounced 3 ways:

Eve-lyn

Ev-uh-lyn

Ev-lyn

HardCheese · 05/02/2012 15:13

My sense is that traditionally, a male Evelyn (as in Waugh) was pronounced EVE-lyn, and a female Evelyn was 'Evv-uh-lyn'. But as there are no longer male babies being called Evelyn in any numbers (or I imagine not), perhaps the 'male' pronuncation has become the norm for girls, too?

workshy · 05/02/2012 15:14

ev-uh-lyn

aunties name but she goes by lyn

SoozyWoozy · 05/02/2012 15:27

My nan's mn was Evelyn, pronounced Ev-Lyn. I love it, think it is beautiful, but I am biased :)

flipflopper · 05/02/2012 15:34

Thanks, I would have said eve-lyn, but i also like the pronunciation ev-lyn better than ever-lyn.
if that makes sense!

My granny is an Ev-Lin and I know an 8yo Eeev-Lin.

pinkhebe · 05/02/2012 15:42

Ev-lyn unless corrected

thementalist · 05/02/2012 15:43

Ev (to rhyme with bev)-lyn

StuckUpTheFarawayTree · 05/02/2012 15:44

My grandma was Eve-lyn. Went mad if anyone pronounced it wrong. My daughter is just Eve.

nenevomito · 05/02/2012 15:45

My Gran was Ev-lyn.

I think the most common pronounciation is Ev-lynn. Ever-lynn doesn't make much sense with the classic spelling. Eve-lynn is becoming more prominent with the 'old lady' name revival.

jandymaccomesback · 05/02/2012 16:36

HardCheese from my dim and distant past, studying Evelyn Waugh I seem to remember he had a wife (or girlfriend) who was also called Evelyn and they were known as "He-Evelyn" and "She-Evelyn", suggesting they were both pronounced the same.
The Ever-lyn I know is Scottish so I always assumed that was the way it was pronounced in Scotland. Maybe that is wrong too.

AThingInYourLife · 05/02/2012 16:41

Eh-ve-lyn

Eev-lyn is a boy's name.

Minimammoth · 05/02/2012 16:45

On a completely other note. Would anyone call their babe Queenie in jubilee year? I like Evelyn, and Yvonne too.

forward · 05/02/2012 16:47

I had an Aunt Ev-Lynn, who would be 90+ now if she were still alive and a friend at school, who was Eve-lynn, but mostly know as Eve (now 40ish). I always thought Eve-lynn more modern, but that could just be my experience.

tammytoby · 05/02/2012 16:51

Ev-uh-lyn
