How do you manage post workout muscle soreness?

I do a lot of power yoga and vinyasas. I feel great after and have noticed a huge difference in strength and endurance so I've been trying some harder yoga recently.

However one particular workout left me feeling very very sore after and I was having trouble sleeping because of it. It didn't particularly hurt during the workout and I wasn't pushing myself so I was surprised. But it was a new routine so I guess my body was not used to it yet! There were a lot of warrior poses and some side leg up planks.

What can I do to prevent and manage the soreness post workout?

Perhaps not particularly useful but I have only got sore afterwards when I've been overstretching myself - in my case turning my neck too much to look at my hand above the head - without being aware at the time that I'm doing too much.

I often think I'm going to be very sore the next day in classes which leave me really tired and absolutely at my limit, but I almost never am.

Maybe something about the moves you were doing was more demanding than you thought because you could do it?

Post-workout, drink plenty of water, and have a nice soak in the bath.

In future, pre- this type of workout, you need to warm up more beforehand. Also speak to the person running the class and ask them to make sure you are doing the moves correctly and engaging the right muscles.

Ibuprofen might help? As a previous poster mentioned, one of the things I like about yoga is although I feel at my limit at the time, I don't often have the comeback with the DOMS afterwards like I do with strength- or cardio-type training.
