Why do these teachers think I want to hear their bullshit about being gifted energy” Yadda yadda yadda when all I desperately need is an hour of mental peace and physical exertion without having to listen to the Instagram philosophy of a 30 year old I Paid £17 for this when I am at breaking point at the constant chatter In my daily life and lack of mental peace . How do I find yoga classes where the teacher gives instruction on poses but no metal/ verbal diarrhoea?

🤣

Have you considered Pilates?

I could never do yoga because I can’t cope with woo nonsense. I love Pilates.

NoFun21 · 08/01/2020 23:39

Yes I think Pilates might be a good idea it’s just I do think I’d like yoga if I found a teacher who knew that some people want to find their own mental stillness without being talked at. Are there any forms of yoga where this is less common?

NoFun yoga is a 50/50 between meditation and movement. I definitely think you would enjoy pilates more.

carrie74 · 10/01/2020 14:18

My yoga teacher doesn't do any of the woo nonsense (not even a namaste to be heard). She has a branded yoga class that she trains other teachers for all over the country. The brand is My Kind of Yoga, might be worth seeing if there are any of her teachers in your area.

doadeer · 10/01/2020 18:56

Loads of teachers don't do this! I think you're being a bit unfair.

Pilates and yoga are totally different. Pilates is about isolating muscle groups and closed movements and pilates is about opening and expanding movements

flamingnoravera · 10/01/2020 19:00

Yoga made me want punch someone, I seriously felt aggressive and angry after the two Hatha sessions I went to. I'm not an aggressive person but it made me so angry I couldn't go again. I've avoided yoga ever since and stuck with swimming which gives me peace and endorphins afterwards.

JontyDoggle37 · 10/01/2020 19:02

Yoga with Adriene on YouTube. Very little fluff and mostly focus on functional improvement of your body

doadeer · 10/01/2020 19:02

Yoga is about opening and expanding movements **

cheeseislife8 · 10/01/2020 19:05

The class I go to doesn't do this either. If you enjoy the practice overall, maybe its worth trying other teachers before calling it a day, in the hope that there's a less woo-y one near you

forkfun · 10/01/2020 19:07

As far as I know, yoga is always combination of poses, breathwork and meditation. Might just not be right for you if you are only interested in the poses.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 10/01/2020 19:12

🤣🤣
The meaning of yoga is spiritual and associated with meditation!
Maybe try Pilates, as others have said.
Do what feels good 😉

thedevilinablackdress · 11/01/2020 12:14

I go to an Iyengar class which has very little if that. I don't know if it's teacher specific. I've been to lots of styles of yoga and it varies quite a bit depending on the teacher. Hard to get none of it due to the nature of yoga.

Sockypuppet · 11/01/2020 12:17

If you do a more old-school variety like iyengar or ashtanga you don't get any of that nonsense.

Try a Mysore-style ashtanga session. No talking at all except for low-volume personal instructions from the instructor.

ZaraW · 13/01/2020 16:59

Lol it isn't nonsense. If you do yoga just for a workout then you probably think it is. We set an intention at the start of every class. I love it and meditation has been a great help dealing with serious medical conditions.

If1knewiwouldnotbehere · 15/01/2020 12:25

I'm a yoga teacher. I don't do Woo woo for people just like you. No Oms, I used to say Namaste just to get people to leave.:) I don't anymore a gentle thank you for coming and see you next time works just as well.

I don't do woo woo because it's not my personallity to do woo woo. Feels disingenuous. Some people like my style some people don't.

May I suggest finding your real tribe, and not just taking any yoga class. Or yes, alternatively take Pilates instead (but it's not like yoga, but it's good enough for what you want it for).

If1knewiwouldnotbehere · 15/01/2020 12:28

Swimming is great, you do you!

A teacher should have warned you that yoga does bring out certain emotions, things we repress sometimes comes out in an uncontrolled manner.

Quick question, did the person deserve a punch in your humble opinion?

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/01/2020 12:29

I was going yo suggest pilates too.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 15/01/2020 12:32

I do Forrest Yoga, and there's none of that - save for a "namaste" at the end.

JoJothesquirrel · 15/01/2020 12:33

My gym invited me to take a class “yoga for Menstruation” or something. I’m not squeamish about talking about periods but bloody hell.

Hollachica · 15/01/2020 12:34

Yoda with Arienne, good & it's free

Hollachica · 15/01/2020 12:35

Yoga even..

RuffleCrow · 15/01/2020 12:36

I love Adriene but she's all about the fluff and she talks nineteen to the dozen. DoYogaWithMe is a bit better in that respect.

ZaraW · 16/01/2020 05:53

I love Forrest yoga I do online classes with Ana Forrest, it can be quite deep and insightful.

HidingUnderMyDuvet · 16/01/2020 06:03

Another vote for trying iyengar yoga- a lot more focus on the physical. Isually some sort of guided relaxation at the end, but very little woo. I love it.

InfiniteSheldon · 16/01/2020 06:11

Please don't do Adrien! I love her am in fact half way thru her latest 30 days but she burbles ALL the way through. Try Body Balance its taught by gym instructors 99% of whom don't understand the yoga so teach it with no finesse you'll get a great workout with zero woo.
