Best books/resources to learn more about yoga

I've been attending a weekly yoga class for about a year now and really enjoy it in terms of physical improvement and relaxation, but feel I've hardly scratched the surface in terms of a deeper understanding of what I'm doing in class and why.

I'd like to ask my other half to get me a really good 'introduction to yoga' type book for Christmas as a jumping off point to learn more about the history, philosophy etc as well as the physical side, and how to go about planning a decent home practice. Could anyone recommend a book (or a couple of books) that would cover this? Thanks!

How Yoga Works by MIchael Roach is fantastic, so original. Very well received by everyone I’ve ever recommended it to ( big thick book!).

Also, I love Living Your Yoga by Judith Hanson Lasater. It’s very readable with lots of practical examples.

In over 20 years of practice, with countless books on asana (postures), these are hands down my favourite books that have shaped my practice on & off the mat.

Enjoy your Christmas treats!
