Bruised knees?

Started a yoga beginners' course a few weeks ago, and I'm enjoying the benefits, but have noticed that my knees are bruised!
It looks a bit unsightly in warm weather clothes.
Is this the norm for people practising yoga?

What position(s) do you think could have caused it? I often used a towel or similar as praying for any kneeling postures. Not particularly to avoid bruises but for comfort.

Not sure which position might have caused it, as we have been learning so much on the course, but have been in kneeling positions.

I've never bruised from it. I would use a towel for padding on mat, in any position that puts extra pressure through the knees (my instructor advises us to do that or fold the mat so that you get a triple layer under knees).

As mentioned you can fold the mat. When I had wrist pain I got yoga jellies they helped a lot I sometimes use them for my knees.

I have dodgy knees and use a folded towel for when I have to put my weight on them.

I never actually bruised them during yoga, though. What have you been doing?

You can get knee pads, or use a towel or fold your mat over in the middle. I have found my knees can certainly get tender with some poses.

But also speak to your teacher - it may be you need to adjust your position and they should be able to help with that.

Thanks for replies, everyone.
Seems a lot better lately: perhaps I have got the hang of things a bit better!
