What do we think about the... umm... spiritual aspects of yoga?

Lifelong atheist here. I have relaxed into "the light in me salutes the light in you" etc over time Smile but still struggle with some of the "We are in Capricorn, which affects your spleen, so this pose is good for your xxx" stuff.

Does anyone else find it distracting?

Or has the spiritual side of yoga won you over in time?

Oh and unfortunately we started a chant at the beginning of the classes now.... Hmm It's in Sanskrit and has a melody, teacher does call and response but it's not my cup of tea at all, way too much with the different language, melody and really long sections of call and response! We all forget part way through each section! Could feel myself blushing with eyes still closed in my mid week class when trying to do it and will have it again this morning.... It seemed like the whole class felt the same so am hoping she packs it in soon Smile

cote, that is so funny! I think I'm allergic to that kind of hippy dippy twaddle.

My current teacher talks about yoga helping one to find their true selves. She doesn't dress it up in airy fairy woo-woo so it feels like a way to be empowered just by being myself rather than hoping some mystic energy will transform my life. No chanting, no moon talk, just yoga and a bit of breathing.
Some people like the woo factor though. Horses for courses I guess!

I once went to a class in a small town fitness centre and this wonan reminded me of professor trelawney out of Harry Potter. She kept talking about breathing in white light and then would do an exaggerated forward bend "AND BREATHE OUT TOXINS, BREATHE OUT NEGATIVITY, BREEEEAAATTTHHHEEE OUT DARKNESS ". She couldn't do a proper yoga pose to save her life but had I continued breathing out like she said my lungs would have been on the floor!

Haha I love how they manage to drive Gandhi crazy with passive-aggressive twaddle. "Bitch, this is my actual religion!" Grin
