Has anybody had anything manufactured in Asia?

I have had a quote from a manufacturer that I am happy with.Does anybody know what the normal terms of business would be.i wouldn't want to pay £000s up front , but on the other hand i assum they won't want to be ripped off either.Is there some sort of ESCROW type thing that can be used ?

Does anyone have any experience sourcing or getting custom-made items through small local suppliers in Asia?

I live in Asia and am thinking of opening a small homewares / childrens retail shop and would appreciate hearing from someone who already runs a retail business with regards to how you source products.
