Proofreading - what are the current rates of pay?

Does anyone know the page rate/hourly rate for proofreading? I have the opportunity to proof a magazine but have no idea of the charges as it has been a while. Also, does anyone know where I can get a copy of the standardized mark-up scheme for copy editors and proofreaders?

Isn't it Hart's Rules for Editors and Compositors? Or do I need to buy a copy?

Carla - I used an in-house style guide so don't know if that's what I need. Does it show the symbols for mark up? Is a single underline correct for italic and a wavy one for bold, etc.? Or do you underline the words and just circle bold or ital in the margin? Have to do this over the weekend!!

Couldn't you brazen it out and ask them to send you their in-house style guide? No idea on pay - been nearly 7 years now. If it's a reputable company, though, I wouldn't think you'd have to worry about being ripped off. God, have to say, before someone corrects my punctuation or grammar, never been an editor, just worked in a publishing house

he marks online. Try here . These are the recommended rates here but I'd say knock a few quid off to be realistic. HTH.

Ponygirl - just what I needed . Thank you so much. My in-house style of years ago was obviously standard as these are all the symbols I'm familiar with. The rates of pay seem fantastic (or am I badly out of touch?!). It's a shame that this is a one-off as that sort of money would be very welcome.

The SfEP rates are right, but you're probably going to have to settle for a bit less.

Yes, I was shocked by those rates when I saw them - I'd be surprised if very many freelancers were getting anything like that. I haven't worked for a nearly 3 years now, though may have to get back to it, so I am out of touch. But probably not that out of touch. Glad it was some help, anyway.
