So is it normal for employers to have to give back unpaid time if they are off a Bank Holiday

My boss says I owe her 1 1/2 hours unpaid work for having Bank Holidays off. I mentioned it in passing to one of my colleagues today in a different part of the store and she said "We never get asked to give time back".
Also, some staff get paid t ime and a hlaf, others (me included) don't, yet new people starting after April 1st will get time and a half!

whats in your contract?
are you all doing different jobs or the same job type? justw ondered if there is a distinction between you all?

i only get my normal pay for bh, but my assistant who worked bh with me was on time and a half, i do get the hours back as time in lieu though. i am on a higher rate of pay than my assistant)

Contract says something along the lines of " you will work Sundays and Bank Holidays according to teh requirments of the store". That's it.
We all do similar type jobs. Some of the people I work with get more money becasue they are health care trained, but the rest of us, AFAIK are on similar pay- we are all however classed as shop assistants. The others also get time off in leiu for working Bank Hols, but this has never been mentioned to me

Do you work in Morrisons by any chance? They're buggers unreasonable when it comes to contracts and working hours imo.

I would assume that you are part time, and therefore entitled to an appropriate proportion of paid time off on bank holidays. I'm guessing that you will have had more than your fair allocation of paid time off and therefore are being asked to make some of the time off up elsewhere.

There's nothing wrong in that necessarily, as long as you are being treated fairly compared to colleagues in a similar position.

I work part-time and as flowerybeanbag says some years I 'owe' a couple of hours of leave if I take all the bank holidays off because I'm only entitled to a proportion of the bank holidays (it's more complicated for me because I work a different number of hours each day of the week). ie. if you work 3 days a week you should be entitled to 0.6 of the bank holiday time off but if you work Mon-Weds there will be proportionately more bank holidays on your 'working' days. (but if you work tues-thurs then they could end up owing you hours).

My dh is part time so gets bank hols pro rata or has to use hols if he wants to take them all. Standard practice AKAIK
