Hi all, I coudl relaly use the collective mumsnet wisdom on this one. I need some outside help to figure out what to do with my life next, at the moment I am in a job I hate and I want to leave - but that begs the question of what next.
I have a 2:1 degree in Social Sciences + Politics;
Other training - counselling certificate, Adult Education Trainer. Maths certificate (degree level) and currently on the Open Universities Working with Young People course.
I used to work in the voluntary and community sector and loved it but when my long term contract ended I couldnt' easily find another job where the hours were compatable with DS, plus they were starting to demand more paper based qualifications as well as experience.
I considered retraining as a Maths Teacher but decided agaisnt it as I don't think mainstream schools are my cup of tea.
I spent too long in the not-for-profit sector so I am used to alot of independance in my job, flexibility and working on a prohject basis. I hate the 'bums on seats' mentality of alot of jobs - I'll work til midnight to get soemthing done for a deadline but if there isn't any work to do I dont' see the point in wasting my time in an office.
I like jobs with an element of getting out and about to them and I'm perfectly happy working primarily on my own and only coming together with peopel for specific projects - I have to admit I can't stand 'office gossip' and poltiics - bores me to tears!
I'm good with finance, have 2 years experience working as a finance officer for a charity but no formal qualifications. Good written english skills, copywrting and proofreading experience related to jobs (dont' judge me by this post - very tired today!)
I would like to work for myself but not sure what area to go into. Ideally I want to work less than full time at least for the next 3 years or so until DS is a bit older.
I can't honestly alot cash / time for additional training unless its a distance learning option or very local with a creche so I can fit it around other things.
Jobs I am considering
Boing back into the not-for-profit sector in community work (my old role)
Going back into not-for-profit sector as a youth worker
Working in schools but not as a mainstream teacher
Working as an adult ed tutor (would need additional qualifications)
Self Employed as a private coach / tutor / proof reader/ business assistant
Working towards a PhD and then lecturing (would need additional qualifications)
Working as an Open University Tutor (would need additional qualifications)
Going right back to my roots and working in the environemntal field (diploma in environmental poltics plus 5 years experience on environmental projects)
DS starts school next september and I was thinking of taking time out until then to try and figure out what to do - however I dont' want to just drift. I will be carrying on with the Youth Work course but could fit in a few hours a week on something else.
I know this is a terrible time for jobs all over but would really appreciate any ideas or help.
