How long should be "expression of interest" application for an internal post be?

An internal post has come up which I am interested in. The application istructions are to submitt and expression of interest by email including reasons why you want the job and what you would bring to the role.

How long should it be?

I was thinking a couple of paragraphs. Should it be longer? A typed side fo A4 maybe?

Atleast a side of A4 I'd say addressing some of the person spec if you have experience from previous roles.

Also if the type of post/career progression has been identified on any personal development plan (if your employer has one!)

Is there likely to be much competition for the post?

Dunno. There is more than one position. I am expecting at least 2:1; probably 3:1 applicants:vacancies.

Personally I'd ignore the fact that it's called an 'expression of interest' and write a decent supporting statement, outlining how you meet all the criteria on the person spec and what you would bring to the role. Probably a side of A4 at least, as MissisB says. Don't waffle though.

I could probably do an A4 side easily. I didn't want to do overkill though.

I will have my currently line manager(s) look it over before I submit it anyway - but I wanted to do something sensible first off IYSWIM.

OK, this is harder than I thought...1 paragraph down; only another page to go....

Wow, really - a side of A4? I would have put a sentence confirming that I was interested, then a paragraph for why I want the job and paragraph for what I could bring to the role, with a closing statement saying something like, 'look forward to discussing this opportunity further with you'.
