Part time workers - Which days of the week are best to work?

peachsmuggler · 17/10/2008 20:08

Am hoping to go back to work part time when DD is 11 months and am planning to work 3 days a week, either Mon-Wed or Tues-Thursday. Any thoughts on which is best?

Monday is a good one 'cause you get Bank Holidays off!

Sarimillie · 17/10/2008 20:10

Mon-Wed works for me; seems to work for most meetings etc, and the long weekend is good!

MissisBoot · 17/10/2008 20:11

Definitely Tues to Thurs - then you don't have to waste annual leave if you want to book a weekend away!

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 17/10/2008 20:11

I'm just negotiating my days now and it seems that Mon-Wed are most popular. Everyone seems to be under the illusion that the start of the week is busier.

Hmm no Sunday feeling vs bank hols. Tricky!

RhinestoneCowghoul · 17/10/2008 20:12

I work 2 days atm and do Tue & Thurs, but when I did 3 I did Weds as well.

As a part time worker you should get a pro rata allowance for BH hols to make sure that you don't miss out (or benefit too much!)

fishie · 17/10/2008 20:12

mon-wed is good and if you extend hours you still get friday as the last bastion. most employers factor bank holidays in.

mistressmiggins · 17/10/2008 20:13

I work Tues- Thurs
that way I can tidy up from weekend on Monday and tidy up ready for weekend on Friday
works for me

we get pro rata allowance BH which means as I dont work Mon/Fri I get extra days

peachsmuggler · 17/10/2008 20:19

Apparently at our work if you work part time and Monday is one of your days, you don't automatically get the BHs off. You get extra holidays allocated to you and you then have to book off the BHs. Am a bit worried that i will end up havign to work the BHs as we often need to have cover.

My thinking was that I will have friday with DD then the weekend with DD and DP and then Monday with DD, but maybe it would be nicer to have two days in a row with just me and her???

Schools ALWAYS have training days on mondays and fridays...

LIZS · 19/10/2008 07:41

Cehck out situation with BHs- there is no consistent policy that if it is your working day you autiomatcially get them off. I would get extra prorata hours for them on top of AL but have to redeem them back or I could work another day in lieu that week and bank them for another time. I do MTTF so having a day midweek to catch up on chores but in your choice I'd do TWT.

MaryBS · 19/10/2008 07:48

Mon-Wed. Where I used to work, if you worked Mon-Wed you got all bank holidays. If you didn't work Mon, you didn't get any allowance for this fact, so no bank hols.

I now work school hours Mon-Fri.

peachsmuggler · 19/10/2008 08:06

I think I might go for tue-thurs as don't want to get in palaver with BHs. I know I will get the extra allocation for them anyway but don't want to be forced into working them as is one of my actual days.

I work Wed to Fri. It wasn't my initial choice but I wouldn't change it now. There is no Mon morning and I get the Fri feeling along with the rest of the office

loler · 19/10/2008 19:35

I do tue-thurs. Got 4 extra days holiday for the pro-rata BHs. have found nursery plays, sports days, school events are normally on Mon or Fri so I can get to them easily.

When I had 1 dc at 11 months would also have liked 2 days in a row on my own with her. However 2 days own my own in a row with ds1 (3.5) is not so tempting! Spreading the 2 days out makes me much more evenly tempered

Also don't feel about paying nursery for bhs when DC aren't there.

Gateau · 20/10/2008 09:12

I do Mon-Wed and it works really well. You get it all over with quickly and then have a long weekend to look forward to. Plus I get all the Bank Holidays. Nurseries are also usually quieter on Mondays.

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 20/10/2008 09:37

An alternative view is that almost EVERYONE who works part time doesn't work Fridays, whcih means round our way you can't get a place on swimming lessons or any activities on a Friday cause they're jam packed. The park is always rammed, too.

If you work Wed-Fri then you get a much more peaceful time on the Mon and Tue if you do things like soft play or swimming etc.

Just a thought.

And not having to go to work on a Monday is priceless.

mrsgboring · 20/10/2008 09:42

Check the rules for bank holidays at your place - at mine flexi rules meant that you were shafted if you worked Mons but had a complete bonanza if you had them off.

Also, IME all the office gossipworthy things happen on a Friday, so it helps you run with the FTer pack if you do work a Friday. Plus it's the worst day to try to get off on holiday etc. so it's not really worth having off.

Just to throw it in the mix, some of my friends have taken Weds off, which means you never have more than 2 working days in a row - works well for them.
