I don't think i got the job, maybe i should have kept my mouth shut?

Last week i gave up work, i asked around for a part time job and last friday went for a trial in our loccal pub for a chef's job. The landlady in the pub has only just moved in (3 weeks ago).

Anyway the kitchen was like something from 'restaurants uncovered', the floor was dirty, the oven was thick with greece, hygeene was poor (the worst i have seen after working in 10+ kitchens). I feel that there was a high risk of food poisoning. I never saw any of the staff wash there hands all night

Half way through the night she sat me down and asked me what i thought about the job. I told her the kitchen needed a deep clean, she agreed but did'nt seem to bothered. She looked a little p*ssed off but carried on telling me about the job, saying i could run the kitchen 4 nights a week etc..etc...
When it was time to go i said goobye, she talked more about the job and said she would phone me after a meeting on monday, so far i have heard nothing.

Do you think i messed up?

If she's not going to listen to my advice and clean the kitchen i don't realy want to work there anyway.

she's just moved in - more likely she's got a zillion things on her plate, something has broken and she's realised she needs a bit more time.

She spent most of the night sat on her bum or smoking outside.

Well, I guess she cant have failed to realise the state of the place and has failed to sort it so I imagine she wouldn't want it poiting out.
So, yes maybe your not the type of dirty bugger employee she is looking for.
Look at it positively though, you'd have got the job, tried to sirt it out and clean it up and she would have no supported you at all. lucky escape.

You are better off not working there. If there exists an ingrained lack of hygiene instilled in the staff already, there is nothing you could do to change it. Standards have to be put in place by the owner and if she doesn't care, well no one else will.
I think you were right to mention it tbh. I'm sure there will be a better job for you around the corner.

And maybe a call to environmental health or whoever deals with food hygiene things is in order do you think?

If the post was for head chef, then I imagine that she would expect you to run the kitchen as you saw fit, iyswim. Watching Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, he clearly expects the chefs to take responsibility for deep-cleaning the kitchen and pitches in and does it himself. So surely, it would be up to you to get the kitchen to the standard it should be and for you to enforce the appropriate hygiene measures the staff should be taking.

Slightly pleased if i hav'nt got it. She did say they were thinking of shutting for 2 weeks to sort a few things out.

Tempting to phone enviromental health, so far i have kept my mouth shut incase she phones and offers me the job.

I would be working along side another chef who is off sick (may not return), i think he may have done a runner

I did say if i was going to be head chef on those nights i want the kitchen to my standards but its so bad, nothing has been looked after and the staff/waitresses have had no hygeene training. It would be a nightmare.

Would you really want to work there?

Dh would like me to work there , we could do with the money, i would rather find something else.
