Do you have a baby and work irregular days? How do you organise childcare?

I got made redundant while on mat leave and would love to return to work as a freelance, but unless I'm very lucky and get some regular shifts booked well in advance, this will obviously involve working on unpredictable days each week. I'm a journalist so would need to travel to offices rather than work from home.

I can't imagine any childminder or nursery would be able to accommodate this (DD will be 12 months old when I plan to start work again and I don't have any family who are able to look after her). Are any of you in a similar situation and have you found a solution?

My situation is not very similar but I do work irregular hours. I only do a few hours a week but I've found a lovely childminder (I met her through toddler group) who has some capacity (she has one full time and two part time children so is only full one day a week). She is happy to take my dd for odd hours as and when I need her. Our local childminders have a nominated vacancy co-ordinator - perhaps you could find out if there's one locally who can tell you who's got what available. Good luck.

You could find an ad hoc nanny that you are happy with.

Some of my clents are freelancers and just call me when they are working and if I can fit them in, I do!

I am based in Herts.

I'm in a very similar situation to you ! I've been advised I might need to commit to an agreed amount of hours with a childminder then pay a retainer for the days I don't use. However a friend of mine works different days each week and found a nanny who would work with this situation and she only gives a weeks notice each time.
