Should I formally jack this job in, sit tight or what?

I have a part time job doing market research. The company I work for is undergoing some restructuring: there was supposed to be a meeting explaining it all and I have had a letter saying, not to worry, you're being transferred from Dept A to Dept B but there will still be work.
ONly the work has dried up, pretty much.
Now I get some housing benefit (ie about half the rent), and when I started the job I told the HB office who adjusted my benefit (ie stopped it for a month then messed about bouncing cheques), giving a good estimate of what I would earn per month. But if I'm not going to be earning anything like it per month, what do I do about the HB, because I can't have them stopping it for 5 weeks every time I have to change my earning amounts) but if I say to the company that I can't work like this and leave the job, will I get the HB cut off altogehter?
I don't get income support BTW, work part time for the company, rest of the time self-employed and get tax credits.

Normally I would say that as you are earning less than what your HB was originally based upon, you should go and tell them immediately because you are probably entitled to more HB (there is some model for calculation somewhere).

Are you worried that they'll cut the HB off temporarily or all together?

Worried that they will cut it off temporarily again while they 'recalculate' as my finances are not in a good position anyway... Am going to sit tight and work hard on all the other things.

I think it's a possibility madamez (the temporary cut off of HB) but don't do yourself out of the benefit. I think you should at least call up and ask (I know, I know, they are blardy difficult to get answers out of!) but if there's a possibility that things might turn around and you want to stick at the job a bit longer, then I suppose it's worth waiting just in case.

Would you get anything if you left (pay out of leave or anything like that) that might tide you over in case they did cut it off while they reassessed?
