If you often interview people…

…how do you like people to answer “why do you want to move now?”. I have been in my current role a long time, should have looked to progress 5 years ago but personal circumstances (traumatic death of dc) meant I wanted to stay in a “safe” job/ environment.

When I interview people I really dislike the vague “more challenging role etc” answers, but without oversharing in the first instance, I am struggling to know what to say.

Any advice please? This is for a senior role.

Talks about the role and org and why it appeals
I want to hear why those two things rather than why now
also what opps do you see and what can you add to the role and organisation if you came on board

I'm sorry for your loss. I think my answer would be "My personal circumstances at the time meant I stayed in the position a little longer than originally planned but now my circumstances are such I feel the time is right to make the move" Most interviewers won't delve deeper into that in the interview.

So sorry for your loss. What Halfblindbunny put is perfect, I’d also add something about how you saw this job and loved the look of it etc - focus what you say on the future rather than the past.

This. Youre reasons have changed. Couple it with "and I now feel that I am in a position where I ...... can / want / need / etc

Keep it short but be honest.

"I'm looking for advancement, which I would have done sooner, but a close family bereavement put it on hold for a while. Now I'm looking for my next challenge."
