Holiday and back up

I’ve just been on holiday and worked for about half of it. My colleague usually is great backing me up but this time said they’d been overwhelmed to deal with any of my stuff. This has meant I’d had to take my computer in holiday as I have a big deliverable due today so I’m stressed to the hilt and only slept 2 hours. I feel I need another holiday! It’s felt like all deliveriables came at once from the projects I’m working on due to client delays.
i feel all the projects have gone to pot! Both colleague and I are looking for new jobs as there’s no support but can’t leave until I get another one! Do you ever have this type of expectations when you go on holiday? How do I survive!

YABU Why did you take a holiday so close to a deadline? Odd that your manager approved it.

I've never taken my computer on holiday, if I've had leave approved, I tell everyone I'll pick my work back up when I'm back, I don't expect anyone to do my work when I'm away

DH takes his laptop every time as he’s more senior and I only take it when I know something will or might come up - but we both get paid really well so it’s part of the territory with our jobs.

Before I developed in my current career, I was very good and strict about finishing on time and not working weekends as I didn’t get paid enough to do that.

I have had to work when on holiday - but only when it's a stay at home holiday and only for 5 mins here and there.

There is only my boss and me in our office, and we both have our own roles. If anything urgent comes through, like a client needing funds asap (we are a financial advisers), then I can do it in approx 5 mins, whereas my boss would need to sit on the phone to the helpdesk and spend an hour. Plus he generally cocks it up.

We also had in the company books a toil - time off in leiu arrangement that I did occasionally call upon

“I won’t be in because of the TOIL accumulation “

it would have given management huge grief to challenge that

Your own fault for taking your laptop on holiday. You’ve trained them to think you’re available at all times.
