Hi!! Bit of background- current SAHM to 5yo and 2 (tomorrow!) year old. Oldest is SEN and just started reception. dh works nights 6 days a week so most of the childcare drop offs sick days etc fall on me

I have been offered a job With A great Company. The role is part-time over five days So more full-time Hours would be four days 11-3.30 And one day 9 till 5.30

It’s a great opportunity with a great company, but I just don’t know how I’m going to do it. Dd Finishes school at 3:20 And the Nursery options we have can’t accept DD till Jan. They want me to start ASAP

How do people juggle it all? What do you do in the holidays? We don’t have grandparents that help And they won’t, even if we asked.
We share a car. I can do drop-off in the morning, but pickup Across a school and a nursery will be really difficult. Plus, I have to factor in settling sessions/ constant nursery buga for DDI don’t really want to put DD in after-school club As she’s struggling enough with school :( But the money would be nice And time to actually talk to other humans. I have asked for three days Made into longer days But they are unable to do this, which is understandable. Do I just accept that it’s not the right time? We are not struggling financially, but could do with some more money as we had to cut back when I became a stay home mum.
Really stuck at what to do

Childminder to pick up the oldest from school and look after your Dd until she starts in January ?
after school club for the oldest could be an option ?
it’s tricky - any friends at all who could do something short term

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 15/10/2026 17:05

Does the school have an after school club or are there any that collect. That’s what I do with my 5 old. You need to take the nursery place for the younger one or find there is another and see if there is a short term nanny in the meantime.

from the job perspective, can they push your start date back to January for when the nursery place can start and give you chance to get something sorted for the older one

Your husband can’t wake up for the afternoon?

Meand2Ls · 15/10/2026 18:44

What time does your husband do nightshift from - until. Mube does 7pm-7am and he does school pick up on my 2 office days

Freshrain · 15/10/2026 19:16

Surely your dh can collect from school, but could an alternative be the 'shift' moving forwards 30mins or and hour, so you start at 10 or 10.30 and finish in time to collect ? Obviously we don't know what the job is, but it makes everything easy if you can.

Then I'd be asking everyone if they could help with the little one until January. You've only go 2 months to cover, and some of that would be Christmas, and presumably your dh could book some AL or even parental leave to cover a fair bit of it, knowing it will all work out from January.
Let the company know you can't start for a month and it is even less time to cover.
Ask people to ask people if anyone knows a CM or Nursery who might be willing to cover for a few weeks.

What hours does your DH do?
can you move forward your start time to 10 or 10.30 ?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 15/10/2026 19:23

Is there any ability to change the hours? You don’t finish early enough to pick up from school any day but don’t finish long enough to justify much childcare. Looks like you are doing 24 hours, that fits within a week doing 9:30-2:30 every day so no after school needed. Or have it in 3 days so only 3 days of childcare or 2 long days/2 short days. The proposed schedule doesn’t seem great as requires 5 days of childcare for only 3 days of pay

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/10/2026 19:26

What time does your husband get home? Can he not sleep till 2/2:30 and then do the school run?

monicaspurpledoor · 15/10/2026 19:37

When I done nights I worked 20:00-08:00 so I could do both school runs and when husband finished work I had another nap. I only done 3 nights, not 6.
what hours are your husbands?

hurryup888 · 15/10/2026 20:25

Can they not offer you 10-2.30pm and husband wakes up and collects just on the Friday.
