Worked in my current organisation for 10 years. The first 4 years was in department A doing basically an admin role. I moved to my current department B 6 year ago, it was the same pay band but had more development opportunities. I’ve only really progressed onto the next band up in the last 12 months on a secondment. My manager has confirmed in the last week I should be made permanent in January.
I have also learnt of a new role in department A that is two salary bands higher than my current. I’m still in touch with a lot of my colleagues in department A who have said it would be perfect for me. One thing I have learnt since moving departments is despite being on the same band the jobs are not equal. Moving from department A to B was a shock and I have felt underpaid since moving. It seems like a lot of departments massively beef up their job descriptions compared to ours. For me to get two bands up in my current department would likely take a good few more years and involve a lot of responsibility and work. This new role in the other team seems to involve a lot of the work I do now they have just worded it differently.
I want to go for it and DH said I would be stupid not too. However, I suppose my concern is if I didn’t get the role my current manager would obviously know I went for it. Concerned they may decide not make me permanent and I end back at my even lower paid position. Also could it affect growth opportunities as they will see me as less committed. WWYD?
