Condensing hours and holidays

I’m soon condensing my 35 hour week in 4 days and will no longer work a Friday.

I work in further education and we have a number of Friday holidays throughout the year.

Can anyone advise how this will affect my holiday entitlement? I think I’ll get back hours for any Friday holidays, but I just want to check if they just get added to my general allocation or whether there is anything else I should be aware of?

I will of course confirm with HR, but just wondered how this generally works?

If it's anything like working part time, I got my annual leave in hours, not days & bank holidays the same way so if a bank holiday fell on a working day I had those hours deducted from my entitlement & if it fell on a non working day I could use those hours when I wanted. Working in further education do you not get term time holidays when the college is closed? I worked term time only so most of the bank holidays fell when I was off anyway so in effect I got the pro rata equivalent of 10.5 days bank holidays to use when I wanted.

It is fairly standard to convert A/L to hours - especially if you are working dats of different lengths. But the other way would be to do fractions of a day.
Your bank holiday entitlement would have to be converted similarly.

Don't assume HR have the faintest idea how to work this out.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I work on support side, so I’m not term time. I just get an allocation of leave.

HR department will definitely know how to work work it. This kind of arrangement is done by about 20% of our department (which happens to be HR, although my role itself is not directly HR), and is becoming increasingly common across our organisation.

Just asking here as I’m on leave just now.

What is the holiday entitlement for staff who work 5 days? Are you working the same number of hours each day? Your holiday entitlement will have a pro-rata number of bank holidays added so you will not be at a disadvantage compared to full time staff

dementedpixie · 27/09/2026 15:26

For example: if full time staff are entitled to 28 days annual leave inclusive of bank holidays and work 5 days of 7 hours then their total hours holiday is 196 (28 ×7)

If you work 4 out of 5 days you're entitled to ⅘ of 28 days which is 22.4 days. However if your day is 8.75 hours your total hours holiday is also 196 (22.4 x 8.75). Pro rata bank holidays will be included in the calculation

mybiggreenfrog · 27/09/2026 22:31

You are entitled to 80% of bank holidays, regardless what days they fall on. Most are Mondays so you will likely end up having to use some AL.

wurkingit · 27/09/2026 23:19

I’ll still be working 35 hours, over 4 days, so 100% of hours.

In which case you will retain 100% of your annual leave and bank holiday entitlement (and sorry, I missed that you did actually say that you would be doing 35hrs in Mon-Thu in your OP).

If your hours are spread evenly over your four working days, then each of your days is 1.25 of a standard day.
So, for example, taking a week of annual leave would be 4 of your longer days, but equivalent of 4x 1.25 ordinary days, which is 5 ordinary working days.

Read to your contract and use the governments online calculator.

And what Friday holidays? In the UK only good Friday and Christmas/ boxing day/ New years can be in a Friday.

So those then? And this past Friday was a holiday for us.

My contract doesn’t mention it and I haven’t been given a new one yet

Friday holidays wont affect you as you dont work them. Pro-rata bank holidays will be part of your holiday entitlement and any that fall on your working days will be deducted; friday bank holidays wont be deducted

We have a Friday bank holiday on a Friday in Sept. Local Gov. No idea why but we do.

I do the same condensed and hours is the omly way to do it. So you get the hours for all bank holidays. If on a monday it costs you 8.75 hrs and on a Friday none. It works out.

LlynTegid · 28/09/2026 19:42

I work four days a week, there is a formula to use. Not got it to hand, sorry.

dementedpixie · 28/09/2026 19:50

I gave a calculation earlier. It does depend how many holidays other full time staff get for the exact holidays i.e.if its more than 28 days

Youre entitled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks holiday. 5.6 x 35 = 196 hours

This is the same figure I gave above for 22.4 days worth of holidays at 8.75 hours each = 196 hours
