Should I take on an extra work day and more responsibility?

I currently work 4 days across 5 which is great as I have still have school age kids.

I’ve just been offered an extra day a week of work to take on a massive new responsibility (basically overseeing the finances of our Asia operations which employee 500 people). They asked me two years ago and I said no but it’s exactly my cup of tea and I’d be good at it and I’m less busy and more confident in my current job now.

I was actually bored witless in my current job and thinking of quitting - but hadn’t because job market is a bit rubbish and I felt to lazy to look.

Shall I do it? I feel sluggish in my current job - I wfh and I’m isolated and understimulated.

But then again being lazy and bored isn’t the worst thing ever.

Dh thinks I should refuse.

Can’t decide.

Why does your DH think you should refuse?
id jump at the chance

cestlavielife · 25/09/2026 17:05

Go for it

cestlavielife · 25/09/2026 17:06

Dh can take his turn to drop hours/a day/ fit around the kids

LittleOwl153 · 25/09/2026 17:11

Is the only reason you haven't jumped at it because you DH thinks you should t?

I would go for it if YOU think you can manage it. How old are the kids... 5/6 i can see the concerns... 12/14 id definately do it!

I’m 48 and perimenopausal. Dh reminds me I have peri Anxiety and have had trouble with being too work obsessive when I had bigger roles in the past (before dc2 came along).

I’m competent though (usually!)

dc are 8 and 16.

Go for it. If you hate it then you can make a different plan. Otherwise you will always wonder.

You are all so positive!

What’s there not to be positive about?
they’ve approached you for a promo - they recognise you can do it and that’s a compliment
go for it
the worst thing that happens is it doesn’t all pan out but at least you’ve tried - the best thing is that it does!
my DH would never tell me not to go for a promotion

Do it! A 16 year old is independent
as for anxiety etc then that may be a exacerbated by your unhappiness and boredom in the current role

Dunnocantthinkofone · 25/09/2026 17:26

Take it. Worst case scenario, you dislike it and go with your original plan to quit
Best case, you enjoy the new challenge

Tortephant · 25/09/2026 17:34

Yes of course you go for it and embrace it full on.

quackquack1514 · 25/09/2026 17:36

I'm in the same position! I've decided not to because i would just add stress. The grass is always greener etc.

Unless you need the money why upset you're lifestyle?

Hobnobbled · 25/09/2026 17:38

If you're thinking of quitting anyway why would you not go for the promotion?! I can't see any downside. If it doesn't work out you have a better starting point to negotiate your next role.

fancytoes · 25/09/2026 17:43

An extra day per week sounds not very much tome to take on that much extra work? If the money is worth it, then go for it.

How much more moolah?

Same, I'd definitely take the job - it sounds like a great opportunity.

ButIWasGoingToRetire · 25/09/2026 18:49

No one day a week isn’t lots of time but I’m able to reorganise some of my existing work which is well under control and I have a team of two I can push more of my European work down to.

I desperately need a change from my current role - I think as pp says the boredom is feeding my anxiety.

Is it possible your DH wants an easier life for him and doesn’t want to step up a bit with house / kids?

seahorsessky · 25/09/2026 23:39

I wouldn't unless you're desperate for the money. You'll never get this time with your kids back, and once you take on more hours, it can be hard to get pt again.
