Is a chaotic induction normal when starting a manager level role?

Is it normal to have a chaotic induction? Every job I have had at manager level has been very chaotic at the start. In my most recent one, there was a huge project that started on day 2. Despite me asking if there was anything urgent before I started.

Before that I started somewhere new at the start of the pandemic so that was a special kind of chaos.

Another one I had I was just left to my own devices to figure it out, with no one factoring in time needed to understand things. It seems like at manager level you have to work for free beforehand to get to know stuff, as they don't factor in time when in the role.

I don't know what's normal anymore.

In senior roles (which may or may not be the same as a manager role) you are expected to be able to do the job you have applied for, hitting the ground running and not needing a lot of hand holding.

You should still be given an induction that helps you get to know people, where to find the info you need and so on. But you shouldn’t need extensive training to teach you how to do the job. If you do need that, I’d argue you weren’t ready for the job in the first place.

I had 2 meetings one where I was told about meetings and priorities and another where I was told about upcoming deadlines. I asked around for a manual and got some various bits (for some specific software).
I wasn't shown anything else until the end of 2nd week when I was given a written here's where to find stuff.

Lots of mixed messages from the person I took over from (we crossed over for the first few weeks), work given to me from sideways and above, which couldn't all be done at same time. Asked for advice and told do what you think is best. Then got told off by a different senior person for doing the work.

I feel like the org has had some issues as when I ask questions people say that was that persons way of working. Lots of pressure to quickly 'complete unfinished tasks' which are more like unstarted projects.

It feels like the start of a bad relationship where I am gaslit and going mad 😂
