Would it be bad to withdraw from an internal interview now?

I applied for an internal job and received an email saying I was unsuccessful. I now been give an interview for the role. I have another interview on the day after and there is a lot of work to prepare for it. The internal interview role also has a task attached to it so I will need to prepare it. I said yes to an interview but now having second thoughts how bad would it be to go back and say I don’t want an interview anymore?

if you have no intention of accepting if successful - then absolutely tell them. They will no doubt be relieved that their diary has freed up !

I’d be concerned that after declining to interview me initially they either felt guilty or don’t have a good pool to choose from so effectively either wasting my time or choosing me as an ‘also ran’
I wouldn’t feel too bad declining an interview if I had something else in the pipeline.

Do you want the job? I think it is likely a shortlisted candidate (or two) has dropped out. Depending on the organisation, candidates that scored higher in the sift are not significantly advantaged at interview, so you could be the lowest scoring candidate to qualify for interview and still get the job.

The other consideration may be that they have got wind you are looking elsewhere and don’t want to lose you.

Depends if you want the job.
if you don’t get the other one and want this one as a back up/ would accept then I would pull a late one and prep for both

I’d just be honest with them and tell them what you told us. If they really want you they could offer an extension
