Is six months enough before leaving a new role after redeployment?

As part of a recent Management of Change I had to select preferred jobs. I didn't get the job where I was. Only 2nd informal interview resulted in success.

I didn't really want to start travelling on the bus. I have been in my new role 5 weeks although I have only done 6 days due to pre booked and approved leave.

Part of my job involves sitting on clinic which I am yet to do as still training. Part of me says it will be a challenge but I am not looking forward to it if I'm honest. I'm a behind the scenes person.

I want to give it a fair go but seriously considering looking for something else after Christmas locally. The thought of another 3+ years on the bus fills me with dread. Is 6 months long enough?

Not sure what you mean by long enough. If you're not enjoying your job, start looking now. It could take six months to find something better, after all.

Why not start looking now if you’re not happy and it’s not what you want. No point waiting.

It's a new role totally different to what I have done before. By long enough I mean should I give more time to settle into the role

I knew the day I started a new job that I wouldn't stay. Similar sector, but I'd move from a job I'd been in 8yrs and felt part of the furniture to a start up which was completely different. I stuck it out for 8mths. Partly because I thought it would look bad on my CV, partly to look elsewhere, partly to give it a try and partly because 1 colleague was great despite the management being diabolical.

Give it a try OP, no one can give you an exact timeline on how to stick it out, but also no harm is looking elsewhere. Wishing you all the best.

If I had been a few years older and closer to retirement age (I'm 57) when this Management of Change started I would have taken voluntary redundancy but I needed to work minimum 4 years to build up my pensions. I enjoyed my original role of audio typist but it no longer exists due to AI. Wouldn't be surprised if it happens again.

My OH says it's not for long but he's not the one commuting and know other family will say need to give it time but again they're not the ones commuting.

You can start looking now, you don't have to try to settle into the role.

Keep turning up and keep looking for a new job.

Can you drive/cycle/ car share?

I wouldn’t work anywhere I needed to commute by bus either. I’d look now

How long is the commute?

Why? I don’t get it. What’s the problem with buses? I travel on them all the time.

I imagine they’re overcrowded, unreliable and expensive. At least, that’s what buses are like where I am!

Nothing wrong with travelling by bus but I have to get up at five to get ready to catch the 5.55am bus which can take an hour then walk to my place of work. OK in the daylight but not much fun in the dark and winter ie rain, cold and snow. Not forgetting about buses that are late or just don't turn up. Did it before 4 years ago and would. If had a choice, have preferred not to do it again but had no choice in that had to put a preference after being unsuccessful in my 1st choice at my old location of work and 2nd choice.

No harm in starting to look for other opportunities now, the job market is terrible so realistically anything would take some time anyway by which you would have a better idea of if you can manage this role. Is there zero scope to discuss other options where you are now for the sake of a few years though?

Tbh 6 weeks is long enough. Your employers have redeployed you to a role where you aren't happy. You haven't taken any vows of obedience, you don't owe them anything and are not obliged to "give it a fair go" when it's not something you chose. Start jobhunting right now, don't wait till after Christmas.

45mins to 1hr longer depends on traffic and or weather conditions from previous experience 4 years ago.

It's not much and I'm aware some people's commute is much longer but their commute is not my concern.

I wasn't redeployed to this role. We had to indicate a preference during the MOC and they arranged interviews. My first two preferences weren't successful. My current role was my 3rd preference.

My new manager is very approachable. As part of my role I will have to do a late on clinic and Wednesday is my day. I asked her if I would be able to start and finish 30 to earlier due to buses and she said she saw no reason why not.

No I'm not obliged however until I have done all aspects of the role and are fully trained I won't know if I have made the right choice. I will look for other options although I wouldn't be surprised if the Trust I work for doesn't do another Management of Change but if they do I will be hopefully a few years closer to retirement age

Not sure what you mean by options. I work part-time Wednesday to Friday which is what I have done in my previous work location so I was lucky There's nothing else that allows me to do the days and hours I do now as already looked on the Trust jobs website and nothing locally atm.

Hopefully as you say by the time I have found somewhere else I will have a better idea if the role is for me. Only thing that might go against me is my age as some employers won't want to take on someone who may be retiring in a couple of years.
