How to protect myself at work.

I’ll try and keep this as brief as possible. I work for a local garage. There are 4 garages with 2 directors, a general manager, garage controller and then various staff below. I am one of the various staff.

3 months ago the controller left. When he resigned 3 of us were asked if we could take on his duties between us. We all said yes. We were asked what increase in salary we would be looking at, did we want to negotiate anything different in terms of packages such as extra annual leave in lieu etc. The meeting was very positive, nothing off the table and the 3 of us felt like we could make a go of it using our individual strengths. It would be a big learning curve but we were keen to see it work.

A few days later I had a long weekend and when I returned it became apparent that another meeting had been held and the other 2 were taking things forward. I was a bit hurt but understood their position. In the meeting we were all present at, I did say I was concerned 3 of us may dilute things too much but this was dismissed at the time. I wish the directors and higher management had been more honest with me rather than finding out after my holiday and from the other 2 members of staff, now managers.

We are several weeks on now. The other 2 have new contracts, great pay rises, new company cars, phones and iPads. I have had nothing despite my knowledge being called on continuously. Some admin has also been passed over to me because, according to the general manager, it’s easier if I do it because of my background and knowledge of our database and records system. How do I deal with myself here. I am trying not to sound like a brat but I am a bit pissed off. I am covering and picking up stuff pretty much daily. Constantly being asked my opinion or what would you do. There are parts of the job I couldn’t do and I would probably be the same if roles were reversed but they aren’t.

I can understand how you feel.

If you definitely want to say something, speak to the General Manager (having already prepared a list of the additional duties you have taken on).

Explain that you feel the situation was unfair.

Ask about the possibility of a new contract and additional pay and benefits relating to the additional duties.

You have to realise though, being such a small team, this may cause an issue if things are currently working well.

It's a decision for you to make after much thought.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to read - but you need to be savvy about potentially upsetting them.
