Does any one temp?

I have 2 jobs. One is my bread and butter job, and the other my paid hobby. The B&B job is turning out to be toxic and everyone is leaving. I spent all last night awake stressed out about the place.

I'm 56. I am thinking of temping. In fact, I used to work in recruitment and run a temp desk, but not been on the other side.

Does anyone temp? If so, what is it like and how is the pay.

I don't need a lot of money as my mortgage is paid off. I would love to get different experiences and work 2-3 days a week on top of my other job.

It’s definitely worth contacting some agencies and having a chat - you can do this before you leave your B&B job to get an idea of what opportunities there are out there for you.

Temp pay is in line with permanent pay for a role generally. So you’d get £12-13 an hour as a temp receptionist but more like £20/25 as a temp EA (sector dependent etc.)
Except you get weekly pay through an agency.
You do accrue holiday as usual, sometimes included in the hourly rate or to take as usual A/L.

I think temping is a great way to earn and experience different companies without committing- if one isn’t great it’s not a big deal when it’s a short term contract.

It just depends if there is regular short term temp part time opportunities in your particular sector and role. There might be more commonly full time longer term contracts. You’d have to explore this with the agency.

I really thought contract work was worth doing. Great way to get experience in something new, if you wanted to. And the pay was decent with less stress as it’s not a forever job necessarily. I don’t see drastic downsides unless you are someone who doesn’t like change at all, and sometimes you don’t receive the same benefits as permanent staff. Swings and roundabouts, basically

Yes I am a temp worker. So far I’ve actually worked for the same company 4 times every time one of their admin or project managers goes on leave. I’ve done about 5 maybe 6 weeks total since May. The pay is £14 an hour, so low as the agency takes a cut. But it hasn’t been hard work and I spend a lot of it reading my book so it’s been OK.
