Hi all, this may be a bit random...

Has anyone enjoyed a hobby
(For example blogging with social media affiliates.) during their maternity leave and made money out of it also quit their corporate job.

I love to hear your stories

I’ve had a few clients do it. One was borne out of baking as a hobby which turned into online retailing of niche and unusual cooking accessories, another was model making as a hobby which became a retailer for model railways, model cars and boats, etc. Both of those turned over hundreds of thousands and eventually were sold for good money. Another turned a hobby of computer programming into a computer games business. All were years ago though before market saturation. Key was always professionalism and to quickly transition from hobby to business which killed the fun/hobby aspect for them. Not sure how easy it would be to do these days when there are huge numbers of influencers and cheap Chinese imports and Amazon to compete with. I think you’d need something very unique and niche to gain any traction.

Yes it’s definitely a thing, many successful businesses start off this way, many also fizzle out once interest wanes so it’s a good idea to make sure you have a good emergency fund, sound financial advice and a robust business plan that focuses on short term, mid term and long term goals. If you’re truly enthused by your hobby and see long term earning potential go for it.

I’m autistic and turned my special interest into a business - I’m nearly 7 years in now and wouldn’t swap it for the world.

Yes my hobby is photography, I originally bought a secondhand DSLR camera in 2014 for blogging, got really into photography, and I’m now the official photographer for my company! 50% of my job is pure photography related. Love this aspect of my job, getting a salary to mess around with cameras, and being able to buy equipment guilt-free. Blogging has had its day unfortunately due to AI sites taking over search results and Google’s enshittification of the SEO rules, but it was great for developing the skills for a meaningful paid career after blogging.

The DC’s primary school cook used to make the odd birthday cake. Over the last 10 years or so she has established a very well respected local celebration cake business and is booked months in advance!

I also know a mountain biker turned MTB guide and chalet host. Ski holidays in the winter, mountain biking in the winter.
