First day being a TA... how do I navigate an non-interactive and very introverted teacher?

Its my first time and first day of being a TA. The primary has all female teachers except one young male teacher and I have been assigned to him as a TA. It was inset day today.

I greeted him and he greeted me back. He was searching something in the class room and I said "please let me know if I can help?" he said " I dont know what I should ask help
for"... then he quitely set up everything. We then went in for a staff meeting... all the teachers and the TAs were chatting non stop ( even the new TAs and Teachers)... there was a silence between my Teacher and me. I did try striking a convo but got one word replies. The meeting finished and I asked " I could help setting up the classroom tomorrow".. he says " its ok , you dont have to hang around, I am supposed to set it up and we will have a whole year ahead to do things". When others asked how his break was he said ".... hmm... ok, unfortunately we are back to reality". When I asked " do you want to enforce something in the class and I could help?" He said " kids dont listen much but I tell them to anyway".

I just came home. I dont know what to think, I was labelling myself an introvert until I saw my Teacher 😵‍💫. All other TAs were busy helping. I didnt know what to do. He is a very young teacher and I am in my late 40s. How do I go about doing my job as best I could because I really want to.

Help 🙏🏼

Let him figure out what help he wants

He is finding his feet and so too are you. Very surprised that two inexperienced people have been put together. Make sure someone shows you how to use photocopier and start by asking if there are any resources he needs printing, labels making, typing up class list. Make sure you have a class list and a timetable.
Hook out some photos of you and family and ask if you can have 10 minutes to introduce yourself to the class. Hopefully he will do the same.
Talk to the other TAs there are always ones who are more than willing to show people the ropes.
Enjoy your role and make yourself indispensable. There is nothing quite as good as an excellent TA to ease a teacher’s workload.

As a former teacher he could be feeling incredibly anxious and depressed that the summer is over. Give him time and space and just keep being available. It takes time to find a rhythm but it is his job to tell you what he wants so if he doesn’t want anything yet - fine!

Day 1 OP

Give it time

redboxer321 · 01/09/2026 15:26

I wasn't a TA but I've been in a not dissimilar position with the teacher wanting to do everything, leaving you role-less, but complaining how over worked they were. It was demoralizing, frustrating and awful frankly.

But I do appreciate what others are saying and that it's only day 1.
Hope things improve for you.

He could feel awakened as he’s younger than you but in charge. I would say that you would like a list of general tasks to be getting on with when the children aren’t there. If this carries on I’d be honest and talk to him. But

It is good you have shown you are keen to help. There will be so much for you to do when you get into the school year, I tend to just find things to do if teacher seems frazzled or genuinely doesn't need help. Even things like checking cupboard for supplies so you know where to find pencils etc when things run out.

Just do what you need to do well. He wasn't rude, just quiet. Focus on your groups.your training, your targets. The rest will just happen.

I'm a TA and I'm very rarely in a class with a teacher anyway. I have my own groups all through the day.

Shinyandnew1 · 01/09/2026 15:42

He’s probably nervous and maybe wishing he had a TA who was experienced? That would have been far better to have placed you with an experienced teacher and him with an experienced TA!

Willreturnforsure2 · 01/09/2026 15:42

It was day 1 and an inset day
OP… you need to give this time

Marksthengym · 02/09/2026 07:28

You have jumped straight to “non-interactive and very introverted” after a few days, on the first day of school and on an inset day no less.

Not a good sign @Overtinkerbell for your teacher to be perfectly honest.

Babyboomtastic · 02/09/2026 12:43

He might be young and inexperienced, but presumably he knew he'd be having an assistant and they'd be looking for tasks/guidance.

Even if he doesn't feel confident, I work sometimes you need to fake the confidence, which at this rate he'll need to do with the kids as well.

I wouldn't be too impressed personally, though I hope it was just a first bad day. Its clearly not his first year at the school, and he knows you are a new employer, so IMO he should be handling this better.

Screamingabdabz · 02/09/2026 13:12

On my teacher training you were given very little training on how to effectively deploy TAs, but even the training they did give was just a bit abstract at that point, and overwhelming, along with everything else you have to learn and do.

So I had no clue as a first time teacher what to say to these extra adults in the classroom. I just expected them to see where the gaps were and support as appropriate. I got better at directing once I knew my own job better. He will too.

Darragon · 02/09/2026 13:47

When I was a TA before I was a teacher I had zero guidance from the teacher and was expected to just get on with what common sense told me to do, mostly managing one particular boy with ASD. Don’t be needy, and don’t keep falling over yourself to be overly helpful with things you don’t know how to do. He knows you are there. Support the students when you have some and don’t expect another adult to micromanage you. You should be working out the ins and outs of the school and learning all the key policies (behaviour, bullying etc) on day 1. What is there for him to tell you to do before students are even there, that wouldn’t take him longer than doing it himself? And stop calling him “my Teacher” like he’s your overlord!
