An employee being open and saying they are struggling a bit at the moment due to anxiety about fear of a cancer recurrence.

Have a chat and offer a listening ear. Refer them to our employee assistance programme. I would probably bear them in mind during the working day and keep an eye on them subtly. Say door is always open to talk.

Manager here and I agree with, and would do, all of the above. In my opinion this is exactly the way the situation should be handled

Absolutely what previous posters have said. I’d also ask if there’s anything they need from a work perspective just now, and have a think about reasonable adjustments they may need.
