How much to charge as a PA/admin assistant?

After some advice as this is new territory for me.

I work flexibly in a recognised profession but am going to use some time to work in a different capcity for a family member. This person runs their own business but is completely chaotic in terms of admin, invoicing, scheduling etc. He is proposing employing me as an assistant in some of my free time (I work two full days, a couple of mornings and a few hours in late afternoons/evenings at present).

I'd take over basic bookkeeping, scheduling, booking travel, organising expenses, running his to-do list, summarising his emails etc, all of which I enjoy and would be good at and would leave him free to do the skilled work.

My question is, how much should I charge per hour for this? In my other job I charge between £38 and £50 ph but this role has the benefit of being more flexible, fully remote and during school hours which is valuable to me. Is £20-25 per hour the right ballpark?

Answers will depend on where in the country you are but a PA/admin assistant wouldn’t be anywhere near £25 per hour here. An experienced admin assistant would typically be £14 an hour here, executive assistant around £16/17 an hour. £20-25 for an hour would be crazy money here for this kind of work.

I employ a virtual PA and she is £19 per hour. And excellent!

At work an Exec Assistant would be on about £20 an hour but that’s PAYE.

You'd be doing well to get £25 /. Hour here unless you had some flash accounts qualification I believe..

How much do you know about accounts and specifically, are you sufficiently well-trained in finance to be sorting out someone else's accounting cock-ups?

I run my own business already so I know a fair amount, and he has an accountant for tax returns etc so all I'd need to do for him would be maintaining and providing the records. But no, would not be up to sorting out something already in a mess!

Thanks for the info. We are in the SE and he is in London so probably upper end of the scale but sounds like somewhere in the high teens would be fair. And if I magically unlock his productivity and 10x his earning potential I'll renegotiate!

Virtual assistants I work with charge £25-30 per hour if it's similar to that.

I charge £26 an hour. I don’t think it’s quite high enough given it’s self-employed, but the work is fairly easy and ad-hoc so I’m keeping that rate for now.
