Tell me which new career to pursue…

I’m the process of divorcing an awful narc who is cheerily cleaning me out financially. He’s about to tell the CMS he can’t contribute to the children’s upbringing so I need a more stable and secure income.

One upon a time I was a marketing project manager, but that was 13yrs ago. Ive been self-employed part time since then, between having children I’ve managed a private psychiatrists clinic, written a Masters in women’s health (qual not quant), worked in maternity service improvement and been a doula.

I love women’s health. I love service improvement. I’m organised by nature but don’t have any qualifications. . I’d like to professionalise so I can grow and move forward. I’m 50 so worried I haven’t got much time left. I’ve applied for research positions, service improvement roles, wild card roles and for nowhere.

What on earth can I do? Please send advice!

What is your target salary? You have a broad background (like me) so I’d start with salary and work backwards.

Whatever requires no further study, you have prospects of getting a job within commuting distance and will get you a better income quickly

I need at least £40k to keep our heads above water when I take into account the mortgage, utilities, groceries and basics.

I’m in exactly the same position. So wishing you lots of luck. I don’t have any advice as I’m struggling with my own situation too and just can’t see how to build a career when all jobs expect you to have done exactly the same job before for several years.

Those different roles would have given you a great potential network to search for work. Have you got yourself a detailed LinkedIn profile saying you’re looking for work, and connected with old contacts that way?

Yeah. I think my CV is ok…. It’s just when you put it next to someone 20yrs younger than me, who hasn’t put their career on hold to have children I guess I’m always the less appealing prospect….

I'd look at public health roles within an LA or charity sector - engagement/marketing/comms roles for women's health support charities?

Where do you live and what is your availability to be in the workplace in person? If you live in a remote location and have limited access to a city / childcare, I would think you have limited options, whereas if you live in London with wraparound childcare you should be able to secure a job much more easily.

Are you working now?

With the marketing comms and women’s health experience, could you work at a women’s health org of some kind creating practice guides etc?
