Task missed deadline, how should I respond professionally?

I've got an interview and didn't realise that the pre task was due before. I've had a lot going on and I can't remember. Anyway they have been in touch to chase - how to respond? Is it a lost cause?

Can you do the task and send it with an apology along the lines of it was in your draft folder as it must have failed to send?

It would have to be a damned good presentation and interview to pull that back for me. Having a lot on and then dropping the ball isn't really what most companies look for as a skills set. If you think you're perfectly suited, go for it and get it sent immediately with apologies. If not I'd not bother and pull out.
