Ex-marketers, what's your job now?

Just that really.

I don't know what I find worse. The thought thought of doing this for another 30 years. Or slowly becoming obsolete and getting pushed out before I can leave.

Really not enjoying it. And don't even get me started on all the corporate drivel that seems to come with a marketing role. I feel like I speak a different language most work days. I literally cannot take it seriously. In one ear and out the other.

Given the AI jobs bloodbath, many roles likely won’t exist soon. I went back to international teaching after 10 years in marketing. I really enjoyed marketing but hated having to constantly fight to get buy in from the CEO in my last job. IDK if this is a long term move or if I’ll be doing something else in 5 years.

Interesting. And yes I'm back from mat leave and every second word is AI. I'm not opposed to change but I do find it unmotivating. Sadly this is all I've done, nothing to fall back on

Watching with interest.

I have worked in communications, marketing, web/graphic design and PR for charities for about 25 years and frankly I have grown to hate it.

The creativity is being sucked out by AI and obsession with doing daft videos for TikTok just for the sake of it.

Also there tends to be a lack of respect from other teams for that area of work with colleagues with no experience or knowledge of marketing or design thinking they can tell you out to do your job.

Just not worth it anymore.

I fear there aren't many disillusioned marketers on MN. I'm leaning towards a move to analytics. But it doesn't free me from corporate waffle and also still leaves me tethered to a desk.

A year of daily pram nap walks was eye opening to.just how unhealthy desk jobs really are. I've instantly fallen back into poor habits now I'm working again and can feel the negative effect already, even after only a few months

Teaching. Love it. The only thing I miss is the pay.

I don't even get paid that well 😂 do you mind me asking how what you had to do to retrain and what area you teach?

Fellow marketer also thinking about what to do next. Considered becoming a career coach but I think there's lot of them know or even moving into something like mediation.

But they would mean a drop in salary so I might be stuck for a while yet.

Definitely worth considering other options though. Best thing you can do is future proof.

I went from marketing into e-commerce and ended up working in software development (as a product manager - not a developer!)
