Work place team building

I had a friend recently wjo told me about a thing that she did at her work where they all made them do some kind of group activity as part of a bonding experience and it got me thinking whether other people have had similar things at work and what people’s opinions about them all? Personally, I think they’re fantastic idea but this person was absolutely adamant that it was the worst thing they'd ever experienced.

I joined a new team a couple of years ago and had a team afternoon (long enough) after training in the morning. Totally excruciating with some people just not engaging or making minimal effort. Loathe these things with a vengeance.

I’m working on a project for a Government Department at the moment. Every time we have a meeting, we have to introduce ourselves and give a “fun fact” about ourselves. It is always the same people in the meetings and we’ve been having them for 3 months, I bloody know who Dave is and the fact in his spare time he is a conductor in an orchestra!!

No wonder the country is in the shit. Pretty cool that Dave is a conductor though!

I'm a miserable fucker so generally abhor them.

The worst one I've ever done was this spider web where we had to climb through the gaps as many times as possible without touching the ropes. At one point we were holding a very slight woman up over our heads and passing her through like a battering ram

Hated them with a passion then again I hated some people I worked with think along the lines of sexist,racist,homophobic etc all rolled into one but spread throughout the workplace.

A friend of mine usually went on these as she quite liked business games. However when one came up which involved out-doorsy stuff she was not so keen. She found a way to duck the team-building by pretending to twist her ankle in the washroom the day before. Cleaner had left a wet floor with no warning signs. Manager sent her to A&E in a taxi and she took several days off sick. Meanwhile the outward bound adventure was a disaster. The boss who arranged it had taken no heed of demographics. One older colleague fell and hurt herself so badly she had to be hele-coptered out. This landed the company with a big bill. Her husband got a no fee no win lawyer and sued the company, which landed them with another big bill. The boss had not taken out the correct insurance and was given a written warning. The cleaner also got a bollocking for leaving no warning signs.

My friend got several days off work and missed all the excitement.
