How long is reasonable before chasing a manager for a reference?

Hello,

I think I have made a mess. As the employee, my new employer are asking me to get involved with reference chasing from my line manager - how long do people usually give it? I did a search on here but asking at just 1 week later may be blooming unreasonable?

To make matters worse, my new employer to be thought originally they could contact HR in general and set the trac system up in this way but since it has to go to my manager to write the most basic of reference, I don't know that they shall receive the official trac chases. Hence me now getting the nudges?

One time before my Manager said they had responded same day when I'd asked for a reference once before (but I managed to avoid resigning at that time) but this time around it is a little different in that as soon as new employer HR said my current hr couldn't help I knew, I'd have to give notice to avoid repercussions of the trouble that lead me to continue job seeking although it to seems to have backfired on me a little as I have my Manager's manager trying to find faults in the pettiest of things.

I know I have no right to a reference but I'm slightly concerned that they wrote a basic one once before in good time and I'm feeling a bit third party with no solid proof the reference request was even received (not logged on trac) and am I just destined for what feels like another round of trouble with the current employer.
