Hi im a single parent Public sector worker. Since me and my ex split ive been desperate for more money (based in south east and we do 5050 so i get no money from ex). I wonder if a career change into sales might work. Currently on 70k.

I think im cut out for it and used to working in high pressure roles, developing strong relationships etc.

But how can you pivot without really knowing if you'll be good? Especially as the job market is so awful Im not even sure id easily be able to get back into the public sector.

Can you do part time / weekend sales to dip your toe in?!

I switched to Sales at the age of 54. I had massive imposter syndrome at first but have found my feet. You could always look for ad-hoc bid writing work which could be done at weekends to get a feel for the sales environment and see if it’s for you.

The world of sales and the world of public sector are so far apart I can’t imagine you getting hired. I know experienced sales people struggling to find higher paying roles at the moment

£70k with saving for a public sector pension is a good income, why are desperate for more money? I wouldn’t give that up for an uncertain career in sales

Oh that's interesting, I hadn't thought of that. Ill look into it. Thank you.
Are you enjoying sales? What has been your biggest learning?

I cant afford to stay in the family home long term on my salary alone and would love not to have to sell it. Its a big mortgage.

I agree sales and public sector vastly different although my section of the public sector is fast paced, high profile. (But appreciate still quite a distance from sales)

I am really enjoying it. I am basically selling what I used to deliver in an operational role. I enjoy creating new solutions for potential clients. My least favourite part is the internal governance (big corporate company) which can be tiresome. Money is good - low six figure salary plus commission.
