My boss if 19 years is leaving , I've applied for his job mainly because I understand the company and know about 60% of what he does and it would be me training a new hire and I thought why not have a go. I'm now at the point I think they are going to offer it me I'm concerned about the support I will get from next level (another key member of staff is leaving at the same time and I think she will be trying to sort out that mess) I don't like the way she works now , doesn't reply to emails, asks for things last minute. I am a very anxious person who has become very comfortable with work and so anxiety has reduced in afraid the lack of support will kick my anxiety off again. What would you do?

I mean this kindly, but it sounds like anxiety is already kicking in, and you're looking for reasons not to do this. You've been there for 19 years, you know that role inside and upside down. The only thing you need is confidence in your own skills and decisions. It would be great if you had a supportive boss to help you with that, but you can absolutely do it without them.

You only get one life. Go and shine in this new job!

Agree - the alternative is someone else comes in to manage you with less experience than you and then you realise how much you know and kick yourself for not going for the job! If you’re anxious anyway you’re probably underestimating how much of his job you can already do - it’s probably 80-90-%! You’ll be great! Just don’t sell yourself short on salary expectations - you’ll be the best candidate from the bosses perspective as you’ll need least training so they should fork out for the luxury of that reassurance!
