No formal interview clothes- this isn’t a style question so much as what’s acceptable these days

Can i wear linen trousers to interview at a fairly formal workplace? My current work is casual dress code and I have a pair of black linen trousers (Daisy from Beyond Nine, sort of horseshoe shape) and a pair of tailored trousers, but those are wool so warm, given the forecast, and also won’t go with the only structured jacket I own.

i also have a dress that I use for funerals, in brown silk with a kind of ditsy flower print, but no jacket that would go with it.

I’m skint and don’t want to have to buy something if I can possibly avoid it, but do I need to contact a friend this weekend to borrow something?

If it’s warm I would wear the dress

Can you not borrow an iron from a neighbour? Or a library of things?

Interview is later today! Thanks for all the suggestions. It’s quite cool here still so I’ll wear the linen trousers, a blouse, and brogues. I think that’ll be ok. It isn’t massively high-paying so they won’t expect a suit, I am reassured by posters saying jackets not really needed these days. The trousers are clean and flat and thick linen so not as rumple-prone as some.

No iron here, no iron at the neighbours, we’re off grid so we don’t use irons or electric kettles or hair straighteners. And when I did have an iron that I could’ve used, I didn’t use it for a whole year so I gave it away.

they all looked well presented despite a variation of clothes.

one lady wore dark blue very well fitted jeans and a jacket with a precision ironed shirt

one bloke in a suit

one in chinos and a shirt and tie

one lady in a soft trousers and a lime green jacket, bold choice… but she looked amazing.

I bet you look lovely. I have always worked in healthcare and have never worn seriously smart clothes for interviews. Neat and clean is perfectly fine, and I feel education is the same.

Thanks so much to everyone who offered suggestions and reassurance. I did wear the tailored (wool) trousers despite the warmth, and a smart blouse- the other candidate wore almost the same- and they offered me the job! 🥳

Day to day I’m sorted, and would probably have got away with the linen trousers, but I felt properly dressed in what I wore so I really appreciate the advice 🙏
