I took redundancy from a full time job aged 62, had a few months off but realised I needed to earn something. I claimed JSA for nine weeks then started p/t in a supermarket and did 18hpw on checkouts until I got state pension at 66. Very many p/t staff were in their 70s and even 80s.

I put as much as I was allowed into the staff pension scheme as they matched it pretty generously and although it was only four years it accrued about £5k which I transferred to my SIPP when I left.

I used to work in fashion retail and I absolutely loved it but I think as I’m getting older I’d be exhausted stood on my feet all day! The hours also aren’t great with kids as clothing shops shut 5:30/6 and now I do admin work I tend to do 8/8:30-4/4:30 which is much better and no weekends or bank holidays or late night shopping evenings.
