Anyone who’s started a new job did you have to show proof of address or just gave your address? Thanks

I just gave my address.

SixSevenShutUp · 18/04/2026 09:29

I had to show proof of current address by ordering a printed bank statement as all my bills are online.

I had to show proof of address as part of identity checks.

Yes and proof of entitlement to work

I had to show proof of address because the address I gave was different to the one that my previous employer had and which was on my P45 (I had moved house and they hadn’t updated their systems). I don’t think I would have had to show it if the correct address was on my P45. I did have to show my passport though as proof of my right to work.

No I don't think I did need proof. I think they wanted to see passport and obviously I gave NI no.

As long as you're allowed to work in the UK I don't see why the employers cares where you live? As long as it's not some absurd commute across several continents. I guess they need to send you P60 etc but it's your loss if you move and don't tell them. Not theres.

Are you worried about giving them proof of your address?

ColdinHTK · 18/04/2026 10:03

I had to show proof of address from a recent bill. Everything’s online so had to download and print it. Also had to show passport.
It was part of the checks that I was who I said I was and had right to live and work in uk

Passport has an address, although obviously can be an old address. You might find for those saying that they had to show passport, if the address had been different they'd also have required a proof of address.

British passports don't carry the holder's address. I do CS recruiting and we ask for a council tax bill, bank statement or utility bill as proof of address.

Proof of address from named documents. I know of staff who have been investigated when it emerged that they had falsely insured their car at their parents country house rather than at their own more expensive London address. Everything has to align.

StillSpartacus · 18/04/2026 15:35

Employers can face consequences if they don’t do right to work checks properly, so most of them will ask for identity documents and proof of address.

Sorry, my mistake. I thought they did, but couldn't be used as proof of address like a driving licence.

I had to have two forms of proof of address as I work in a financial service. Also had to provide proof of my eligibility to work in the UK (passport).
