Facing a PIP at work after unclear instructions and poor feedback

I was informed last week that I am going to be put on a PIP.

This has come out of the blue and was reported to be because of the following;

  1. I was asked to find a document for a Board Paper. We have 3 different versions of the document and I asked which one was needed.
  2. I was given some instructions about a paper to be written for a committee. I provided a draft and was told it wasn't good enough, it should have been done ages ago (I had no deadline other than the next meeting) and was then sent the same instructions. I then used AI to work out what was missing and gave the work in to the expected standard the next day.

The person asking for the PIP is the new Fixed Term director. I a based in NZ.

My manager is also on a PiP because last year I made a health and safety report about all the leadership changes and a redundancy process. They tried to get me to say it was an HR complaint but I declined.

I have no KPIs and my Performance reviews are very frustrating. I am not bothered about the job, but now I feel like I am fighting for my reputation. Over last weekend I fell apart emmotionally with the stress but now I am ready.

Has anyone else been through something similar and do you have any wise words?

loads of people have. You have to decide if they are really trying to help improvement or whether it’s a cost cutting exercise. For me it was defo the latter as me and a colleague was put on one at the same time by a new manager. I ran circles round my boss as the PIP was not measurable and they didn’t conduct it properly. Eventually I was made redundant not due to performance of course (I had a lot of good evidence from emails mistakenly sent to me that HR was trying to pin something on me but they couldn’t). My colleague put in a grievance and got a settlement. These shenanigans are still
goong on in that company as they have to save money. The jobs are going to lower cost countries. If you’re not engaged in the job look for another.
the PIP was a real head fuck as I’d had 30 successful years and my feedback from team and peers couldn’t be more glowing but of course it didn’t count! Wish I’d put in the grievance now!

You have hit the nail on the head, it is a cost cutting exercise but it has taken me a long time understand why do this and not redunancy or restructure. It makes it a terrible place to work and all the good people are leaving. It just seems like a own goal.

Good to hear that you ran rings around them in the PiP and they couldn't do anything. I guess I will be playing that game now.

Thanks for you help.

I have no redunancy payout in my contract - and this feel so destructive and personal, and pointless because nothing is being changed.

Its horrible.

Been reduced to tears a fortnight ago.

The atmosphere is so horrible to that of two years ago.

Sad they told me to write my own pip but no colleague of many years knows what they are on about. If they do then they deserve each other.

And then we hear wild stories of how in another life as a
manager he helped someone reverse park. In their lunch hour.
my sides are splitting,
