Hours being reduced

Cat1202 · 05/02/2026 19:05

I have been told today my hours will have to be reduced from April, I work full time in a small company. The business has been hit hard over the past year. I feel it’s a cop out and I’m being pushed out as I need to work full time. He has said I can work whatever hours around a second job, which I don’t really want to do. Redundancy wasn’t mentioned. Anyone know where I stand on this. This was just an informal chat and nothing in writing

I think you’ll need to take formal advice re your contract, I don’t think it’s his decision to make. Depends on how long you’ve been there too

It would be worth phoning the ACAS helpline for advice.

What does your contract say about hours of work?

Cat1202 · 05/02/2026 19:25

I have been there 3 years in 2 weeks, I’ll go and check my contract, thanks all

It says on contract normal working hours are Monday-Friday, 39 hours split over 5 days, that’s all it says

Yeah I think you have to want to accept this. They can’t just do this. If you don’t accept it, surely they would need to make u redundant with the necessary payment.

Although if they give the minimum it would be hardly anything 3 wks or possibly 4.5wks depending how many completed yrs over the age of 40.
