How to get good at formatting in word

I have a job where I often have to pull together drafts from other people and edit/ improve them.

I used to work somewhere where they were then copy edited for publication but I have to do this myself.

The problem is, I really struggle to sort out dodgy formatting, numbering etc. I just don't really understand all the different settings that sit underneath the document iykwim.

How do you learn to do this? Any recommendations for YouTube tutorials or other resources?

I was working when the first iteration of Word came in so for me I learnt it as the years went by. I still use control keys for delete copy and paste.

Are you in a position to draft up a document that they use to do their reports so that the formatting comes to you in the same font etc to start with?

I think you can import the text as is, without the formatting so you can format it altogether in one go. Or import it into your standard document as text so you can use the paint format setting to copy your format over.
