Next step for comms career

Hey, I’m hoping to get some friendly career advice.

I’ve worked in comms (PR) for a decade, but looking to revitalise my career after stepping away from direct comms work in my current role. I’m keen to get back to earning a good salary (50+ but ideally looking to work towards 80/90k long term) but not sure where to start as comms roles are far between in Wales. I don’t want to work for an agency again. I’m thinking of doing additional training to broaden my scope beyond PR, and would love to work for a tech or B2B company.

My experience is primarily in earned media, which is fairly one dimensional imo for the current job market.

I have had a few interviews and keep getting to final stages for senior in-house jobs, but being beaten at the final hurdle by people with decades more experience.

Any tips on next steps to boost my career and make me more appealing to employers? Any good, free training I could do? Or careers where I could climb to a higher salary?

Haia! Just saw this and have advice and going through similar stuff. No time
tonight to get into the weeds but I can tell you what I am doing if you drop me a DM. I’m nearly 47 but guessing you might well be younger than me? I worked in London for a decade and it’s very true about money we can/can’t earn in Wales comparatively. Pob lwc and drop me a line if you’d like to chat and I can share my LinkedIn so that you know I am not a total loon!

Look for a digital marketing role?

Get into LLM marketing/media/SEO etc. And how it will affect PR in as many angles as you can think of.

there's a lady called Heather <something> on LI, she does some excellent courses around LLMs for companies. Also Google, LinkedIn and other online platforms all have lots of material.

There is an entire new world of rules and best practices opening up in this area, and if you are the one who can decipher and implement them, you are on a winning streak. Be the expert employers didn't know they needed, but will desperately want.
