Hi,
Me and my husband had been TTC for years with no luck when a great opportunity had come up so I started a new job in September and finally fallen pregnant in the November. Obviously still early days but how to I break it to work I am pregnant. (I am the sole HR person at the company)

You tell them as soon as you legally feel like doing and give them time to get in a temp to cover you for your maternity leave. You are HR, you should know this!

You consult yourself about what the company policy is about it?!

AwfullyGood · 06/01/2026 13:06

If I were you, I'd wait until the 12 or 16 week point and then just tell them you are pregnant. If you wang, you can add that it's a fantastic surprise given you tried for years without success etc.

Don't apologise for being pregnant. No one should ever but their job above having children they want.

I do know the legal procedure and I was the one who wrote the policy, I'm more nervous of actually telling them I'm pregnant and the guilt feeling

Congratulations!

I understand how you feel OP and I’d probably feel the same.
But honestly women get pregnant just into jobs the whole time! I’ve even worked with people who turned up for their first day pregnant.
And do you know what? None of us batted an eyelid and I was truly happy for the women. So hold your head up, proudly tell them when the time comes and don’t feel guilty.

Guilt why? Because the company hasn't been savvy enough to provide itself with suitable HR back up?

Trust me. The company will be just fine.

You work in HR. You know how silly you’re being, surely!
