Hello and welcome to the new Freelancers/Self Employed topic.
Please enjoy.....

OP posts:
SheikYerbouti · 11/06/2008 15:31

This topic is going to be thrillsville, I can feel it in my bones.

VWLady · 11/06/2008 15:46

What a great new topic, to go with my name change!
I'm self-employed and have always appreciated the help/advice I've received when asking my silly questions usually in Legal/money matters. Now I know exactly where to post!
BTW I'm self-employed in partnership with my husband. We restore old cars and campers. I have 2 dcs and spend half my time racing from the workshop to various school events. In previous lives I've been a civil servant, a telephonist and a learning support assistant.
I like being self employed - I never miss a dc's assembly because I can always catch up on the paperwork at midnight!

UnquietDad · 11/06/2008 15:51

Jolly good. I shall look forward to this.

talilac · 11/06/2008 16:10

Goodness. Hello everyone.

Ditto paperwork at midnight, VWLady..

moodlumthehoodlum · 11/06/2008 17:12

Yay yay yay. Thank you mumsnet towers.

The list of who does what is here

Maybe I'll transfer it over here?

OOOO its so exciting!

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/06/2008 17:20

It's so new in here you can still smell the paint!

MaryAnnSingleton · 11/06/2008 17:23

can I be on the list ?

moodlumthehoodlum · 11/06/2008 17:38

Of course

I'm wondering if it might be better moved into a new thread in this topic.

Flibbertyjibbet · 11/06/2008 22:24

OOO here I am! Can I just say that I HAVE ALREADY DONE MY TAX RETURN for 07-08!! Three weeks ago!

And I got a new client today

mazzystar · 11/06/2008 22:26

well, here we are then

MegBusset · 11/06/2008 22:26

Hi! I've been self-employed for, ooh, two months now.

funnypeculiar · 11/06/2008 22:28

Flibbertygibbet - shuddup about tax returns will you? Or this topic could quickly become one of my 'hiddens'

MegBusset · 11/06/2008 22:31

Don't get me started on class 2 versus class 3 NI contributions... and what is it with share fishermen anyway?

Flibbertyjibbet · 11/06/2008 22:37

DP (also self employed) is pretty sick of me going on about it too!

Flibbertyjibbet · 11/06/2008 22:47

Obviously then at this time of night our dps and dhs will assume that we are doing tax return online our admin.

edam · 12/06/2008 12:06

Brilliant idea for a topic. Does this mean I can get some tips on admin? I have the dreaded shoebox of receipts and no idea what I should be doing...

zookeeper · 12/06/2008 12:09

Brilliant idea for a topic - i've been self employed for a couple of years and am still woefully ignorant about the does and don'ts.

flowerybeanbag · 12/06/2008 12:14

I would just like to take a minute to whinge about my website problems.

Afer lengthy designing process (by me ), we were launched at the weekend, to trumpets and fanfares, all very exciting.

Got all my mates to check it out, as you do, then found that DH at work and another mate couldn't browse through it without it shutting down their browser window .

After discussions with my web hosts it turns out that websites hosted by them are not very compatible with Internet Explorer WTF?

I have already paid them for web hosting for the year and nowhere in their t&cs or anywhere on their website does it say this.

Myself, I don't see the point of being a web hosting company if you can't cope with Internet Explorer, but there we go... Their idea for a solution was to 'contact everyone and tell them they need to download Firefox instead'. 'Everyone'?? For crying out loud. DH has bulldosed them into giving us a complete refund, fortunately.

So we have changed web hosts and waiting for it to come up again. Will debut here for you all to admire soon as.

edam · 12/06/2008 12:15

Bloody hell, flowery, what a bunch of nutters.

flowerybeanbag · 12/06/2008 12:20

I know!

MaryAnnSingleton · 12/06/2008 12:21

ooh I've done my tax return too, or at least have submitted my pathetic details to accountant and now await their bill

JoshandJamie · 12/06/2008 12:41

Yippee! Yahoo! Very glad that this shiny new section has been set up. Well done all involved.

JoshandJamie · 12/06/2008 12:47

Edam - I send my shoebox of receipts/invoices to my bookkeeper who magically converts them into actual financial records - like P&Ls and balance sheets. He also does my VAT returns and my annual tax return all for the grand sum of £24 a month.

BecauseImWorthIt · 12/06/2008 12:49

We had this from our website designer as well, fbb.

Firefox is obviously preferred by geeky/technical types, but not very helpful out in the real world where so many people use IE!

edam · 12/06/2008 12:59

I know, J&J, I should probably do something sensible like that, shouldn't I...
