Edging my bets ! Help! Please!

I am being made redundant at Xmas.
Had an interview today for a slightly tedious job and was offered the job. Annoyingly ( or luckily?) my dream job with perfect hours has just popped up. Interview date is the same day as new job start date!
Obvs I might not get dream job ( but stand an ok chance).
So....What do I do.
Accept initial job then give up if I get dream job.
Ask to start a week later incase I get offered other job?
Any advice/thoughts welcome!
Please be kind!
I'm really not into messing people around but need to be selfish here I think.

Oh apparently it's 'hedging' your bets not 'edging'.

In your place I wouldn’t risk unemployment.

snowibunni · 17/12/2025 16:54

Accept initial job and ask for a later start date.

HereforonedayonlytoavoidStrangerThingsspoilers · 17/12/2025 16:54

I would accept the tedious job and apply for dream job, because you might not get it and a tedious job is better than no job at all in the current market.

Greedybilly · 17/12/2025 17:10

Thankyou kind people - i think i will accept and ask for later start date then quit straight away if i get other job.
Don't want to risk having no job but really not good at being duplicitous (?)
Thanks for responses.
God it's stressful!
This is why people stay in the same job for years.

@HereforonedayonlytoavoidStrangerThingsspoilers-- my thoughts exactly. No job would be very bad!

I'm in a similar boat!! If you get offered the dream job what will you do? Never start the new job and hand your notice in straight away?
I am due to start a new job mid Jan but interviews for my dream job are to be held mid Jan!!

Dozer · 17/12/2025 20:31

Tricky! Would apply for the ‘dream job’ and stick with the current start date, unless you want a break can afford the gap in pay. You might not get an interview and interview dates often get delayed. If you do get an interview would then ask to delay the start or for time off for a prior commitment.

Greedybilly · 17/12/2025 21:10

@Fernleigh22-- i don't know. I'm not good at not being honest. What's your plan?

OP posts:
Greedybilly · 17/12/2025 21:11

@Dozersorry you've lost me. Do you mean prior commitment as in the less good job?

OP posts:
Dozer · 17/12/2025 21:24

No, I would plan to and start the job you’ve been offered and, assuming you get a few days notice of the interview, lie to the new boss and apologise but now have a medical or dental appointment, or a funeral!

I think I would have to take my dream job and have an uncomfortable conversation with the current new employer! This job I have just accepted is FTC for 12 months so not ideal in any case!

Greedybilly · 17/12/2025 22:04

@Dozeraah I see what you mean
I'm not really worried about the interview time off more the don't want to start a job and leave after a week or so. All v stressful

OP posts:
Greedybilly · 17/12/2025 22:06

@Fernleigh22-- yes I think an uncomfortable conversation is the only way around things really. Cringe. I guess they will have forgotten in a few weeks/months tho eh?

I can magine you don't want to, but needs must, put yourself first.

SchoolDilemma17 · 20/12/2025 06:22

Don’t be ridiculous. Of course you start your current role.
you really want to risk unemployment for a job you might not even get!
i recently recruited and the appointment was delayed by weeks and weeks because if internal issues and sickness.
We also had over 1000 applicants. A dream job for you is probably also the dream job for many others.

even if you get it, you wouldn’t start the week after or maybe even know the week after.

EleanorReally · 20/12/2025 06:24

i think a medical appointment on your first day , t hat way they cannot refuse

Greedybilly · 22/12/2025 17:41

@SchoolDilemma17....
I guess you missed my sentence 'please be kind'????
Merry Xmas

@SchoolDilemma17-- actually I know the company recruiting and they're pretty speedy in terms of selection. Thanks for your patronising insight on this situation though. 🤣

Helpmefindmysoul · 22/12/2025 17:50

In a similar situation. Due to start January but have interviewed for civil service and would rather do that even though it’s less pay. Going to suck it up and start the job and then see what happens until the results are released because the CS is an absolute joke for recruitment and the best candidates aren’t recruited.

”please be kind” pretty ironic coming from you

Greedybilly · 22/12/2025 19:44

@Helpmefindmysoul-- it's all very stressful but hope it works out for you.🤞

Look out for yourself. Start the tedious job because even if successful application and start dates can take months. Then there’s no risk or gap in income. People do often leave before end of probation and just say the role isn’t for them

Greedybilly · 30/12/2025 20:24

@Amilliondreamsisallitagonnatake-- thanks yes wise words indeed. Just being a bit wet about messing people around.
