Potential new role at charity.. pay discussion

Would it be reasonable to ask for a higher salary than the advertised amount which is a not a range just a number , for an office based role at a well known charity? Do I treat them as any other organisation or would this be inappropriate to ask?

To note it’s covering a 12 month position so i’m assuming it was the amount the previous person who will be returning was earning.

Absolutely, I've always negotiated in the charity sector, successfully. If it's your first 3rd sector job you'll realise quite quickly they need to pay staff properly to do their work.

100%. I work in the sector and have ALWAYS negotiated my salary.

Thanks both, can I ask do annual bonuses exist in the charity sector? @Dinnerplease@ForZanyAquaViewer

You can’t have bonuses that are profit sharing in a charity. There can be balanced incentive schemes but it has to be carefully worded, and I think it’s unusual.

Yes salaries can be negotiated in the charity sector, they’ll either be able to meet you or not like any organisations. But no you shouldn’t expect any bonuses

moogdroog · 03/12/2025 20:28

Absolutely no bonuses in the charity sector, although I did receive 2 posh teabags, a pin badge and a card in the post recently from the CEO.
You can certainly try to negotiate your salary, but in many places you'd get nowhere, things are very tight.

I work for a large charity, where the pay scales are really strict.

How senior is the role? I'd imagine where I work would perhaps negotiate for someone senior, but a standard office role everyone starts on the 'entry point' salary for the pay band (not the pay of the person they're replacing) then each year there are inflation and performance linked pay rises.

Someone starting with us could ask, but the answer would be no.

mynameiscalypso · 03/12/2025 20:30

I think it’s fine to negotiate. I work for a charity and most people I’ve hired have (as did I). No bonuses though. Depending on the charity though, things are pretty shit right now though which may impact their ability to negotiate.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 03/12/2025 20:32

Oh, and no. No bonuses. Bigger pay rise if you do a really good job. But still the absolute max would be less than 10%
