New job blues

Title says it all really. Second week into new job and not enjoying it at all. Nothing much given to do. Everyone is busy around me and I just feel unhappy. Thought the role would be super busy but I just feel like crying! Any wise words?
Its an office coordinator role part-time.

You have to give it a chance @Cantstandthis, can you shadow someone ?

Cantstandthis · 02/12/2025 13:09

@DirtyGertiefromno30 Hi. I am in the process of trying to book in one-to-ones with people but I just feel incredibly anxious. I just wish there was a big pile of work for me to do!!!! Unrealistic I know.

You need to try to relax .
Do square breathing exercises that will help you sweetheart fingers crossed 🤞 and wishing you the best of luck .

It’s a very normal feeling but honestly just reach out to people say “hello I’m the new xyz person I’d love to find out more about what you do and see if there’s anything I can support on” you honestly have nothing to lose at all no matter how scary it is just fake it till you make it. I’ve been there and this approach has worked for me. It can be as quick as a 10-15min phone call.

I think part of the problem is that I am a bit "old school" and used to sitting down and working through stuff. Learning tech and meeting people is so new to me (I am a more mature lady) Just want to feel confident that I am actually doing something and not pretending to work!

This has happened to me a couple of times. Six months later everyone who might need me knew who I was and I was rather more busy than I would have liked. It just took a bit of time to settle in and become part of the processes.
Both roles took around 3 months before I started to think it would turn out ok.

I’m in my 50s too and the pace of tech change can feel scary. It takes a good 3mths I find to get over the terrified feeling and 6 mths to feel productive. Could you try writting 3 things you want to achieve today? It maybe as simple as have a Teams call with yourself so you can try out the tech if that’s new to you. Look some learning up on you tube, set up one call with a new person. Then as you start to tick things off you can feel your confidence growing. Talk to your mgr as well.

Thanks all. The first week was okay because I had minutes of a meeting to do and induction things! Now I sort of feel a bit flat. I am desperate to be busy. I have scheduled a couple of 1:1s to meet staff but finding it really hard to feel enthusiastic. I was so looking forward to starting. I was in my previous job for over 10 years and only left because of the toxic environment so I miss my old job as well which doesn't help. Part of me just wants to retire 😔

Another one who agrees give it time. Obviously you will get to know if work will be coming your way or not. I am also like you and hate being "idle." I have unfortunately had the experience on a couple of occasions where the work never did surface and I left, in one role I did tell the boss they said the role was busy and it was far from it.

Cantstandthis · 03/12/2025 09:15

@cocoloco12 Thank you. I feel work will be coming my way and I can see a little bit what I will be doing in the future. When I had my interview I did say that the role must be busy and they stressed it would be! I remember in my previous job I had a few days handover and then I was dumped in with a huge workload! I suppose that was the olden days and tech wasn't as it is now.
